Audi R8's fast?
Moorron - 15/4/09 at 06:22 PM

I love these cars and think they are one of the best lookers to come onto the market for ages but....

are they that fast to warrent a £80K price tag? i had one come up behind me sharpish at the weekend so i planted it and was miffed how it took him 2 miles to catch up. Then for some nutter reason he passed me and 3 other cars on a head on with the other traffic comming the other way, i liked the sound of it but decided to not carry on as i thought this was mad driving.

S are they 'that' fast or was he playing?

Wadders - 15/4/09 at 06:26 PM

My last road car was an RS4 which has the same engine but is heavier and yes it was bloody quick. I would never have kept up with a locost though if there were corners involved! Previous to that I had a 996 C4 and the Audi felt much quicker than that. Between an R8 and a porker the R8 would be a far better choice!

Having driven one very recently i can confirm that they are quick, but not brutally neck snapping. The delivery is smooth ans constant, and just goes on and on!
Beautifully built and a pleasure to dive, even tootling around town.
Sound is awesome too.
Would i buy one.... No, i think there are beter ways to spend 85K. Like three Caterhams!

blakep82 - 15/4/09 at 06:32 PM

i think more likely he let you pull away to give himself some clear road to play with tbh

hellbent345 - 15/4/09 at 06:32 PM

heard the story today .... was waiting for the post.

I think you need to turbo yours .... sounds like its getting a little slow

Moorron - 15/4/09 at 06:45 PM

The sound when it went past was very nice, but didnt seem revvy if that makes sense. He was 2 up aswell.

Maybe i cought him off guard when i planted it but considering he nearly drove over me a few seconds earlier made me think he was ready.

Oh those front lights do look awesome, just a pity every chav will have them this year.

eznfrank - 15/4/09 at 06:45 PM

If yours aint quite fast enough you can pick up a 40 BHP Nitrous kit specifically for the ZX12 from Muzzys for $399.

Pushing quite close to the 500bhp per tonne then (ok so it's not permanent but for the ££ gotta be worth it?)

Go Faster Linky

Funny you say that, i still have the NOS kit that came with the car fitted to the old engine with progressive controller. But i thought of selling it instead. mmmmmmm i wonder how long it would take to fit it.

Project7 - 15/4/09 at 07:03 PM

I've been for a passenger ride in a R8 and they are definitely quick enough. The guy driving it sounds like a bit of a muppet though.

Also... nice avatar Wadders

nib1980 - 15/4/09 at 07:10 PM

The New GTR is Faster £25K cheaper, and generally just better

but i am biased

Hellfire - 15/4/09 at 07:37 PM

On the road, an R8 will easily outperform a ZX12R BEC. The 0-60mph would be pretty close but after that, the R8 would leave you for dead

To be fair, the R8 will out perform almost any locost in every area, but only if you don't own it! It is easy to thrash the balls off a demo car without impunity, different if it is your own pride and joy Rescued attachment IMG_9763.jpg

is that yours! :O do we ask for custard tests anymore? you lucky bugger i want one!

Hellfire - 15/4/09 at 08:03 PM

No point buying the R8 unless you intend burying the throttle pedal occasionally and ragging it about. All IMO of course.........

Not the only stuff to get into my workshop, unfortunately I only own the blue one! Rescued attachment IMG_1030.jpg

awwww but nice workshop all the same!!

Antnicuk - 18/4/09 at 09:37 PM

There is a lot of generalisation here, every locost is different. The r8 spec is known. TG did a drag race with a 911 c2 and and a R8 and the porka won, I spent the day at the pod with a brand new 997 911 c2 and the best it would do was 12.9 at 107 and we knew what we were doing!

Last time i was at the pod a couple of weeks ago there was a Lambo mercialago? and the best he could do was 12.7. I dont think the Audi would break 13 secs on the 1/4 mile.

Yes, a 2l pinto would likely struggle with an R8 but my 'locost' would not have a problem with an R8 in any arena except comfort and pose-a-bility of course.

TG proved the capability of a kit car with R500 around their track! although i appreciate not locost

Mark Allanson - 18/4/09 at 10:31 PM

A 2.0 Locost didn't struggle with an R8, except getting traction at the roundabout exit on the A30 eastbound, got a little sideways!!

Ninehigh - 19/4/09 at 12:58 AM

Last time I saw an R8 on the road the stupid old fart was driving that slow I flew past him with the whole family in the car... People like that should be banned for life, who buys a 180mph car and doesn't even do 60 on a 60 road?

But I'd have one tomorrow, and then bet a grand I'd be banned by October

Audi R8 quarter mile time 12.601 seconds @ 113.08mph

0-100mph in 9.91 seconds with a top speed of 187mph

You might have a chance of beating the R8 in the first but definitely not the second.

Phil

adithorp - 19/4/09 at 11:17 AM

I did a track day at Anglesey last year and started one session with an R8 behind me. Didn't see it again. I was 2-up with an instructor so not ideal in a BEC and my driving isn't the best by a long way. I got caught by a Nobel M400 in the same session just as the instruction started to help and then pulled away.

I would according to the gear calculator with my 3.09 diff ratio at 7450rpm my car will be doing 230 mph

just collected a new turbo which is a bit bigger than the old one (pictured next to it) but i still dont think its big enough to do 230 mph

Ninehigh - 20/4/09 at 09:40 PM

http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=111342

What are you doing with the old one lol

Antnicuk - 20/4/09 at 09:45 PM

even the stock rx7 turbo would be huge for a diesel engine, you would never spool it up.

I used a 2.5L landrover discovery diesel turbo on my 1200 cc motorbike and it was way too small........

Ninehigh - 20/4/09 at 09:47 PM

I wasn't talking for my mondeo!

Mind you I think I'd be banned from building it if the first part I came home with was a turbo unit

£80 grand on an overweight, overpriced mongrol of a car or an Ultima for less than half the price!

Re the "old fart" driving slowly, I had a similar experience when the 959 had just been launched. One went past me with a line of traffic behind it....
