Airfields
David Jenkins - 19/5/04 at 01:14 PM

Anyone in the South Suffolk/North Essex area know of any airfields or similar where I could give my car a good shake-down run?

If there are any then I'll trailer my car to it. Not looking to do silly speeds - I'll be happy to cruise around at 30 - 50 mph, just to get everything bedded in and any bugs sorted.

I really want to get some mileage down before I take it on the road...

David,

If you should find a nice, big area for testing, you might be interested in these recommendatons for using a skidpad to find the best tire pressures. The results can also be used as a guide for revising spring rates.

David,
Have you tried Eye Airfield? I used to run in race bikes their a couple of years ago. Used to get quiet busy there on a saturday with learner drivers. So best to go early morn!

Only bad point is its slap bang between Ipswich and Norwich Hospitals so you have a long ride either way! Found this out when after a 150mph pass on the race bike my mate got on the pit bike, fell off at 20mph and broke his collar bone Doh!

I hadn't thought of Eye - does it have any private roads (or even the runway!) I could run on?

Can I just drive up, or do I have to get permission off someone?

cheers,

David

David,

We never used to ask for permission. Just roll up, unload the van and go for it. If you turn off the A140 just before you see the airfield on the right, there is an entrance a couple of hundred yards up on the left.

It does have one of those raise/lower type basic barriers but it was open all the times i went. There are a couple of industrial units at the other end of the runway and they use this entrance for access.

We spent a whole day down there once with a van, a couple of cars, a whole gaggle of noisy bikes and a video camera!
No one ever bothered us.

On a busy day I've seen as many as five learner drivers, three bikes, a couple of kids in go karts and some remote controlled airplanes!

Will have to pop round and have a look at the finished article while the missus is down the horses.

Have fun!

Doug.
