European Road Trip 2 Report
bbwales - 10/8/10 at 12:15 PM

Hi All,

Well the trip went well and we did 2632 miles, not as far as we had intended but we decided not to use the toll roads and keep to the back roads in France and Spain.

We had a couple of small problems which resulted in extra overnight stays in good camping sites.

Left Wrexham at 4pm on Friday the 23rd and got to Dover caught the ferry and set off on the first toll road, my indicators decided to pack in and at the first available service station repairs were completed, I bought a 12v soldering iron and must admit it was useless but lighting the gas cooker and heating up the tip in that the repairs could be completed. We set off again and after a while stopped for fuel on filling up Dave on the trike said his rear brake was locking on, 4 hours later we couldnt repair it so decided to stop at the nearest camp site to effect repairs, found a municipal campsite at Pierrefonds, lovelly place with a huge chateau (they film Merlin there) The repairs were finished and we decided for another day there to have a good look around the castle. It was here we decided to stay off toll roads for the rest of the journey.
Next day we drove south of Clermont Ferand and stayed in a camp site there and then the next day we headed for Perpignan over the Millou bridge, took some pics and then the batteries fell out of my camera.grrrrr. Stayed in Narbonne for the night and then headed into Spain where we stayed at Roses for 2 nights. From Roses we headed for Andorra and found a road designed for 7's 45kms of bends and enjoyment, must admit my arms ached the next day. We stayed in Andorra for 1 night and stocked up on duty frees etc.
Left Andorra over the passes and into France heading for Foix, more good driving roads. After Foix we headed towards Bordeaux, here we had a problem with the trike where a crack appeared in one of the uprights, but a knight in shining armour appeared and the upright was welded and we were back on the road within 1 hour.
Stayed in a campsite south east of Bordeaux and the next day headed off to Poitiers and stayed with a mate for 2 days, set off then for Normandy and Caen stopped on the Loire for 1 night roughly 1/2 way to Caen, here the village was closed and we ended up eating a kebab from a van whilst sat on a bench in the town square. Next day headed off for Caen and eventually stopped at a very good camp site in Creully for 2 nights where we could visit the beaches and the museum at Bayeux oh and the war graves. Rather humbling.
We then set off for inchville where we met up with some friends who were setting off on their camping holiday touring in a Landrover 90. Stayed here for one night and then headed off for Dunkerque and home, arrived in Dover at 7pm Saturday and got home to Wrexham at 7am Sunday, they had closed the M25 and M6 so joys, all those miles in France and not 1 traffic jam and there we were stuck on the M25 for 4 hours.
The trip was brilliant and we have decided that Germany will be the next trip in 2011, things to do, remove topbox and build a trailer, move steering column closer to me, change gear stick position, move switches so I have things to do over the winter.
And I have to organise my run in North Wales for Sept 10/11/12
I will attempt to put some photos up but please bear with me.
regards
Bob

Well I am dead green with envy.
But I am setting off this Friday to go to Belgium, a place called Wervik, to attend a classic car and bike show, getting back next tuesday.
PandO northsea ferry's get me to zebrugge which is much better than the drive south to callais.
Denis.

Looks excelent Bob, glad you had a ggod round drive this time.

Would love to do something like that myself but it would have to be in the tintop for her indoors

Engine run OK? No coolant problems now?

LG,
Steve

Hi Steve,

The only problem was at Dover when I joined the queue for the ferry, I hadn't noticed but the temp krept up and the fan switch didn't switch on so it blew the relief and I was sat in a steam bath, pushed the car to the side, let it cool down and then added coolant, after that never had another problem as I used the manual switch if needed and it was on the M25.
