Leicester to Dover
clairetoo - 22/7/12 at 12:42 PM

I'll be heading off on my holiday next friday , and just wondering which is the best route to Dover at the moment ?
Last time I went down the M1 , and delays through the road works meant the 190 mile drive took nearly 5 1/2 hours , and I nearly missed my ferry
But.....going A14 / M11 is 15 miles longer , and I will be hitting Caimbridge around rush hour

So.....whats the current state of the great british motorway network these days ?

I drove both the M1 and M1 /A14 / A1 from South Yorkshire to Hertfordshire two weeks ago and other than for an accident on the M1 (whch is why I went A14 A1 on the way back) there were no major delays. This was all between 6am and 7pm.

Most of the hold ups on the A14 near cambridge in the evening are on the north bound side going towards Huntingdon, M11 is usually not too heavy until you are approaching the M25. Sod's law says when you go you will get held up

Say high when we pass each other going the opposite way back to rainy scotland where the roads are good and the weather pish.

Dont book ferry at stupid times when the roads are at there busy.

I'd say either get there early using the M1/M25/M20 or if you cant leave early use the M11 and just allow plenty time.

The M25 dartford bridge is going to be busy and the m25 is going to be hellish at 4/5pm so use as little of it as possible.

You've picked the worst time to use these roads, but the M1 roadworks are much improved.

2am is the time to do it. 77 all the way in england, then highly spirited driving on the other side

A1 every time.

It's a lottery between M1 & M11. Just depends on roadworks and accidents.

M20 is a better (quicker) route than M2/A2 - the latter is mostly two lanes whereas the M'way is 3 lanes. Speed cameras on M20 around Maidstone
