Is there anyone around oxon area (im in Didcot) that owns a kit car with a car engine that would be kind enough to take me out to show me what its like? Ive been out in a couple of becs now and am not too sure they would be for me with the lack of torque. I think the type of engine id want to have would be a zetec, duratec or vauxhall, and not really interested in the older cvh or pinto's. So would be good to get out in one of these, cheers in advance!
Give me a chance to get my car back form the trimmers, and for a break in the weather and i'll pop over from Carterton and give you a blast
about. It's an old X-flow but it'll give you a rough idea.
ATB Dan.
Ive heard quite a few people mentioning about torque in bike engines and I have to wonder what there on about
my r1 indy would still out accelerate most things in 4th gear at a reasonable speed
infact the other day it wanted to go so much that I had to knock it down a gear to convince myself I was in 6th
Bike engines may lack torque, but they lack weight to make up for it, so it doesn't matter. As said, most of the fastest locosts are bec's. I think the main thing is wether you can put up with the holwing engine at motorways speeds/on long journeys.
oh dont get me wrong, Im not ruling the bike engines out as initially thats what i wanted to go for due to the lack of weigh and seq box. But after
trying out a few becs now I just want to check what my opinion will be like of a cec. The car will mostly be used for track days and the odd nice
eve/weekend blast, so im not bothered about road friendliness or noise. I do love the howl of a good bike engine!
cheers for the replies!
what bec did you go in mate??
there is no car engine that sounds as good or I think gives the buzz these do
especially after 8k rpm
a bec sound a million times better than a cec imho
as for performance not had anything beat me along the roads yet
take a little to get used to driving one but once you have mastered it
all i can say is WOW
having said that my next kit will be a cec just for the reverse ( and so swmbo can drive it )
if you know what i mean
they have both been 919cc blades. It would be good to get out in something like yours (R1) to compare. I know what you both mean, there really is nowt
like a bike engine.
But of course i do have to compare them both before i go for the ONE.

BECs are great unless you want to go backwards.
You will have to pop along to the Oxfordshire meet, its normally on the second tuesday of the month but can change depending on whos available. The next one should be the 13th of June. We are holding them at the Boundary house in Abingdon at the moment so not far from you. Last month there was a XE powered westie there so one of the engines you are looking at.
Just recently my cam belt jumped on my 4AGE 20V. Though I knew there was something wrong with the power I was still able to to easily out accelerate
most things and reach 120mph (eventually).
Got a surprised when I popped it on the dyno to start checking things and it only managed 100BHP at the flywheel! Usually puts out 150BHP. I never
would have guessed that much but interestingly the torque was hardly down at all except at the top when the inlet cam should have been advancing.
ill be going to the meet over in abingdon 2mro so hopefully will get to see what the cecs are like!
