Hi,

Just contemplating a 240 mile trip in my car and figure that I should possibly get a breakdown cover. Any views on what's best?

RAC will deal with you on route to or from motorsport events unlike others... I've been with them for a good while and on the one occasion I needed them they were excellent.

Im on AA family cover (my parents pay for it ) but if i were to be paying for it, i would go for RAC. I have my insurance with them and iv never had any problems

Great minds and all that stuff. Good to know they'll do the kit as well.

If you travel in Europe much, check out ADAC they're German, but run through Green Flag in the UK.

Their standard cover gets you and your car home from anywhere in Europe, and the cover is around £80.

Much recommended by 'ring veterans

I have used green flag for my Vortx. It isn't a relay service which is better in my opinion. They take you to your destination in one trip. I've broken down 4 times and each time they've taken me home quickly. Two of those times were after track days, not that they knew that.

Auto Aid - £36/year. You pay the recovery and claim back the fee. Recommended on MoneySavingExpert.

I got it when my tintop cover ran out, but it covers the policyholder and his/her spouse (no g/fs or b/fs) for any car they are in. One downside is that it is UK only - could be a problem if you go overseas at all, and there is a clause that says you have to carry a roadworthy spare tyre at all times. However, I spoke to them today because SWMBO has a Mini with no spare and I was told that the documentation hasn't been updated and since many modern cars don't come with a spare you are covered. I said I also have a kit car with no spare and she said that was OK too. Haven;t had to test it out yet though...

Simon

Edit to say that, interestingly for a legal document, the policy doesn't say you have to have a spare wheel, only a tyre

Heard them recommended before - works out cheaper getting them from Germany and they are happy when you call them in the uk. I keep getting tempted - except i've been with the AA for 13 years, get a free upgrade and never had a problem with them (but not got a kit car yet so can't comment on that).

Green Flag for me - personal cover for self and wife no matter what vehicle you are in/on.
Paid for itself when No1 son stuffed his 200SX through a hedge (they all do that sir!) 100 miles from home and self when the tintop boiled over also miles from home.
Good thing is they use local companies so there's generally a rescue within the hour!
Cheers, Pewe

Just joined up with Auto Aid earflier today, for the price (a whoping £36) and cover you get I cant complain, only ever heard good things too. Just make sure you carry your credit card with you and then claim it back.

Told them I had no spare and they said they would just run me to the nearest tyre place to get one fitted if needed so spare tyre not an issue

I've been with GEM Assist for the past 2 years: -

http://www.motoringassist.com/

Cover myself and the Mrs. on joint cover for about a hundred quid, for any car on the most comprehensive cover.

Used them twice so far, both times with the kit, both times service has been great.

It includes membership to GEM, which entitles you to free accident management services. Basically if you have an accident, they'll handle all the claims and forms etc for you. Not had to use this (touch wood) but nice to know.

Only downside is they don't do european cover.
