TWO Scots roads have been named among the best driving experiences in the UK.

The A817 from Loch Lomondside to Garelochhead, Dunbartonshire, was praised in a poll for the breathtaking views it offers hundreds of feet above Glen Fruin.

And the 50-mile drive from Invergarry to the Isle of Skye on the A87 was selected thanks to its scenery and challenging driving conditions.

The A817 was built by the Ministry of Defence to carry building material for a project at Coulport on Loch Long.

When the MoD we re finished using the private road, it was passed on to the local council for public use.

The spectacular route, which was voted No5 in a British top 10 by owners of Caterham sports cars, has featured on TV's Top Gear.

The A87 was voted No6 in the poll of favourite "wind-inthe-hair" drives.

The top-rated road in the UK is the hilly part of the A57 between Sheffield and Glossop, Derbyshire, dubbed Snake Pass and described as a "tarmac rollercoaster".

The clockwise stretch of the M25 around London between junctions five and 21 was voted the worst.

Caterham sales director Andy Noble said: "Due to the congestion motorists now face, it's often easy to forget how enjoyable driving can be.

"But turn off the beaten track and there are plenty of roads that remind us driving is still a privilege."

Achh... ye still cannae whack the auld military road from Spital O Glenshee to Braemar!

This vid gives you a taster... an absolute hoot in the summer - especially when you hit the ridges (around the 4 minute mark!).

ENJOY

Poll is still up on the caterham cars website. I think there will probably be a southern bias in the poll as I think most of their owners are probably dahn sahf.

Come to The Scottish Borders to see some really fabby roads.

A708 from Moffat to Selkirk, A707 then A72 to Peebles and Blyth Bridge. Turn south, still on the A72 then turn off onto the A701 back to Moffat - absolutely outstanding!

Anyone doing this run let me know and I will have the kettle on for a brew as you come through Peebles.

Cheers

Gary

Looks like a nice place, but don't you know speeding is dangerous?
