Bonnet Latches
ChrisLeary - 30/6/17 at 07:14 AM

Morning all,

Before I commit to these as an upgrade to the rubber IVA catches, does anyone have any experience or opinions about their suitability to secure my bonnet?

Bonnet Latch

They seem like a fair price for a tidy latch with the ability to secure them already built in.

Cheers,

Chris

out of interest, is there a problem with your rubber catches, or are you simply just looking for some extra security?

Nothing wrong with them, I just don't like them aesthetically.

Chris

I wonder if you can get an R pin in the security hole? The over center catches (particularly the rubber ones) have a habit of unlatching..

That's what I like about those ones, Dan... I've been onto the Protex site and you can buy the locking pins separately. Only thing is, direct from Protex the latches are more expensive than from Merlin!!!

I'm with Bluemoon.

They don't tolerate misalignment of the surfaces.

I think, as far as looks are concerned, that they are a downgrade
The metal ones look agricultural, OK for a tool box lid. IMO

I went the same way, Changed only the front 2 for the ones from car builder, added the R-Clip and then i put a little length of piano wire from the R-Clip to the inboard end of the wishbone.

Purely to prevent the bonnet coming off on the track and the wire to save losing clips.

I replaced my IVA ones for some protex ones that lock when they are closed, to open them you have to slide a small catch , really pleased with them my rubber ones sometimes opened on a journey.

I've just ordered some from Protex, they'll be arriving tomorrow so I'll give you the low down. If you go onto their site they have the diagram for each latch so you should be able to match one to the rubber IVA ones?

Chris

Issues with delivery buddy, so should they turn up tomorrow, I'll let you know.

So, the latches arrived today from Protex. They seem very good quality and well built. The locking mechanism via the pin seems to work, but time will tell. Considering the price, I'm really happy with them.

Chris

Bump on this topic please.

I am currently fitting a new Bonnet. I have the rubber ones which have never caused me trouble but now I am refitting the catches the distance needs to be spot on. Too loose and they in clip, to tight and they may not latch properly.
