do you mean 'assembly lube'

you can get it from most of the usial suspects
eg. burtons: http://www.burtonpower.com/catalogsearch/result/?q=assembly+lube

not sure its really needed for a normal engine - as to how long it lasts, mine is still covered in the stuff and my engine has been laid up for over a year now...

I spoke to a machine shop who said they used gear oil. Think it is good as it is EP spec stuff, so maybe resistes initial dry startup better?
Otherwise I have always used engine oil, but cam lube on the cam (OHV engine, so different requirement to OHC)
I do spin the oil pump before startup with a drill, get the pressure to working levels. Again the OHV makes this possible

i have a spare engine for the cobra ,it has been stood for three years so thought i would give it a look over.ended up taking it completely to bits .all in gooooood order ,but as it may not get used staight away was woundering what oil to use for rebuild so i do not end up with a sized engine...........i will size it up myself by driving it to death................

I've always used the STP oil additive - the stuff that is like treacle - for rebuilds including the bearings plus cam lube for the camshaft

such as Oil Treatment For Petrol Engines STP 450ml NEW | eBay UK
