Hello, newbuild. i think i've decided!
Johneturbo - 7/8/07 at 07:45 PM

Hi everyone
after selling my car (evo5) i've decided that i would build my own car. well at least try!
i've spent many weeks looking over the site and other build sites, and i think the MNR is the car for me
i don't think i'm too bad with a spanner, my only downfall sometimes is my impatience,as my otherhalf keeps reminiding me

My choice so far will be RT inboard powered by R1 engine, think i'll also go for a reverse box as there is no way she will push the car! it will be mainly used for the road, with the odd trackday.

as much as i would like to pop up to the factory, i'm a fair few miles away.

Also am i crazy building a car that i've never even seen!?
i'll think of some questions soon too!

cheers
john

coozer - 7/8/07 at 07:48 PM

You may be crazy but plenty people have done the research and landed at MNR's door.

Wise choice even if I am a bit biased!

Welcome to the fold, you will get plenty of help and advise on here.

Cheers,
Steve

GazzaP - 7/8/07 at 07:49 PM

johneturbo from stock hatch??

donut - 7/8/07 at 07:49 PM

Yep, good choice. now get tht cheque book out!!

jos - 7/8/07 at 08:01 PM

get to a show and sit in one first

you need to make sure that you feel comfy in the seats and chassis before you take the plunge

Please try to sit in one before you buy

marc n - 7/8/07 at 08:06 PM

its only a day trip to come and see us, will be well worth the visit so you can see cars in all stages of build, from raw parts to fully built and also the machinery and people who make them

best regards

marc

marc n - 7/8/07 at 08:08 PM

think there are a couple of owners near to you, if you email me tomorrow at work i can put you in touch with them

cheers

marc

Hellfire - 7/8/07 at 09:04 PM

Welcome to THE SITE friend... you've made a very well informed choice. MNR are very possibly the most developed 7 type car this side of the big two. There are other manufacturers out there who would also very likely satisfy your needs. Main thing is that you get what you want, as you've stated you have already made the decision and happy with it!

Have fun with your build....

Steve

matt.c - 7/8/07 at 09:23 PM

rb968 - 9/8/07 at 05:33 PM

John

I can recommend visiting Marc and Chris. I dropped in at very little notice last Friday on my way to Harrogate and Chris very kindly took time to show me round despite being busy with the chaps from the BEC(who's names I forget). Great to see the car in the flesh and the quality effort that goes into each one. Sounds like I am thinking of the same spec as yourself as well !

My only complaint is I had to make my own cup of tea......lol

Rich

zxrlocost - 9/8/07 at 05:59 PM

hi rich it was me

ta chris

you buying one then

rb968 - 9/8/07 at 06:53 PM

Hi Chris

Good to meet you last week.

Definitely want to build one. Now just need to sell the Porsche, sort the garage, and get one ordered. Chris said to give him a shout in a couple of weeks for a run out in one though.

Really impressed with the chassis quality and pretty sure it will be an inboard RT R1 engined with a full cage. Liked the orange as well !

Rich

zxrlocost - 9/8/07 at 07:31 PM

good choice

The Orange grew on me whilst I had it aswell

No keeping your car. I happened to mention to the guys that I was thinking of a bike engined powered car for hill climbs and sprints and they said they had a part built available.

Johneturbo - 20/8/07 at 03:03 PM

Well i'm glad i took the advice of going up to meet Chris, Marc, Bob, mclaren, and fifi (i think)
Me and Lisa popped up on saturday, well not so much popped 4 hrs later we arrived!
anyway 3hrs later and a few coffee's and tea's, some made by me!
i've gone and done it, i've left a deposit for an RT-Inboard. i'm hoping to go for R1 injection, if my budget will allow!

we really enjoyed our visit, i now know i've made the right choice

now to find them donor parts

Lulu not Fifi but you have met the whole crowd.

I belive it was a bit hectick over there on Saturday.

glad you enjoyed it see you soon.

Agriv8

TimC - 20/8/07 at 04:09 PM

The RT Inboard seems to have got very popular! Do people know something that I don't!?

Good choice mate - the R1 injection is a quality motor. I just didn't fancy doing the wiring for one. Hence why I'm on carbs!

Davey D - 20/8/07 at 07:31 PM

I too was there on saturday, with my family + fiance (...dont ask lol ) and placed an order for an RT Inboard for an R1 setup

TimC - 20/8/07 at 08:04 PM

You'll all finish before me anyway!

I keep meaning to join, then i get distracted on Ebay , looking for that ilusive 2.3D estate

ps if i dont find one, what would i be looking at to buy one? the 3.38 diff that is

[Edited on 23/8/07 by Johneturbo]

Johneturbo - 28/10/07 at 09:26 PM

Well i thought i'd post an update.
i picked up my kit wednesday,( big thanks to Chris/Marc) had a couple of days sorting out the garage.
i started the build this weekend, and i feel knackered already!
i've only managed to fit the bulkhead panels, the brake line master to rear riveted it,(can't do the ones of the T piece as i think the connectors are wrong way round!) run one the fuel lines. and kinked the other! is it normal to feel like i've not achieved anything in the 16hrs i've worked on the car

i do have couple questions, i'm going to have injected R1 engine so where would i put the fuel pump, am i right in thinkin it needs to run in between the fuel line in?
also can i just use 8mm copper pipe from BQ to replace the one i kinked? (if i can't get the kink out that is)

looking forward to going to work for a rest

[Edited on 28/10/07 by Johneturbo]

stuart_g - 28/10/07 at 10:07 PM

Fuel pump would go at the rear, that's what the build manual says anyway.

B&Q pipe is fine as long as it is the same internal diameter.

Johneturbo - 29/10/07 at 08:33 PM

Yep i see that now! sometimes it's good to flick a few pages futher on!

how are you getting on with your build? think we picked our kits up on the same day.
bet you've already fitted the engine

[Edited on 29/10/07 by Johneturbo]

stuart_g - 29/10/07 at 08:53 PM

Yes i'm sure we did pick them up the same day.

You are way ahead of me. I am just finishing off remaking the footwell panels as the passenger side had a cut out for a chassis member that is no longer there on the new chassis. I could have fitted the original and filled the gap with PU adhesive but I am a bit of a perfectionist so I decided to remake it. I'm just finishing the drivers side to match, hope to have them fitted tomorrow night.

sucksqueezebangblow - 30/10/07 at 09:53 AM

Fantastic news that you picked up the kit and got started John. I've started stripping the 'Busa (fairing off and traced oil leak to external oil pipe). Will trailer it to Daytona's shortly to get the engine/swingarm locknuts removed. Thanks again for suggesting and speaking to Daytona's for me. Will probably order new external oil pipes from them for the refurb (unless anyone knows of a cheap source of 'Busa engine parts). We must get together for that pint some time soon! Yours Clive.

Johneturbo - 30/10/07 at 08:30 PM

Clive if you fancy popping over some time to take a peek your more than welcome,
you might see things that will help you get a better result... as long as you don't take the wee to much with my pipe bending skills!
ps i didn't type wee

sucksqueezebangblow - 2/11/07 at 10:30 AM

Hi John,

Absolutely, I'm travelling next week but maybe the following week? Don't expect too much though, the phrase 'the blind leading the blind' comes to mind, at least in terms of my knowledge and experience of car building!

Yours, Clive!

Hi Clive
anytime is fine, just let me know when.
