This is probably a dumb question, but what do ATV's fall under? I know trikes fall under the MSVA rules, but what about ATV's (or quads, whatever you like to call them?)

Are there size/weight limits that determine a vehicle is a motorcycle or a car? How is the distinction made?

4 wheels? Less than 15 kW (20.1 BHP) less than 400kg (I think)? MSVA.

More than any of these? SVA.

Thailand rules can differ

These are the EU-categories on Quadricycles for the 2 and 3 wheeled. I presume UK follows these in the MSVA?

3. This Directive shall also apply to quadricycles, i.e. motor vehicles
with four wheels having the following characteristics:
(a) light quadricycles whose unladen mass is not more than 350 kg
(category L6e), not including the mass of the batteries in case of
electric vehicles, whose maximum design speed is not more than 45
km/h, and
(i) whose engine cylinder capacity does not exceed 50 cm3 for
spark (positive) ignition engines, or
(ii) whose maximum net power output does not exceed 4 kW in
the case of other internal combustion engines, or
(iii) whose maximum continuous rated power does not exceed 4
kW in the case of an electric motor.
These vehicles shall fulfil the technical requirements applicable to
three-wheel mopeds of category L2e unless specified differently in
any of the separate directives;

(b) quadricycles, other than those referred to in (a), whose unladen
mass is not more than 400 kg (category L7e) (550 kg for
vehicles intended for carrying goods), not including the mass of
batteries in the case of electric vehicles, and whose maximum net
engine power does not exceed 15 kW. These vehicles shall be
considered to be motor tricycles and shall fulfil the technical
requirements applicable to motor tricycles of category L5e unless
specified differently in any of the separate Directives.

If you can fall off it, it's a motorbike (especially on Samui- been there, got the ripped t-shirt and the Ko Samui tatoo)....

I know some of the factory built road legal quads have a restricter in the inlet to keep the power within the regs, it's not a lot of hassle to remove it...

I was just asking because I had another one of those silly plans brewing in the back of my head..

I just thought it would be sort of cool to make a custom frame and add the axles, and transfer case from a Suzuki Samurai + a small CVT transmission and a light diesel engine..

Add some three-link suspension front and back and figure out a way to make it all work while keeping weight down and it would be a kick-ass little rock crawler..

Completely pointless, naturally.. hence why it's filed under "Silly ideas - best to forget"
