how quick should i destroy the exhaust packing?
DaveFJ - 11/5/09 at 07:42 PM

OK....

As some of you know i have developed a horrible rattle from my exhaust...

talked to CBS (who made the can) at stoneliegh and they said the central tube was probably loose and told me how to tweak it...

have just stripped it down and found that the tube is really very secure at one end and quite tight in the cap...
in fact i cannot pull it out at all

removed the packing and found its half burned away!!!

total 1700 miles seems a bit quick!

have just ordered a replacement packing from CBS... interestingly the current one shows no sign of the stainless wire wool described in the refill......

question is... is this too quick to burn out the packing? and could this be my rattle somehow?

tried heating the exhuast with a blow torch to see if it got loose with heat but no....

Mine burned away after 2k (Albeit i had quite a few issues with timing/fueling during that period) and had a rattling noise which is why i replaced it.

Repacking it stopped the rattle, (it was tight in each end, so i expect more acoustic that free play.)

Somebody at stoneleigh might have been custom chrome mentioned that wool is better for surviving heat, but isnt as good at dampening noise - so if your not too bothered about the noise might be worth sticking to the wire wool.

My CBS can is becoming progressively louder and I've done nothing like that mileage. In fact at SVA it was 94db, at Goodwood track-day it showed 97 and at Keevil last Sat 99 so I need to do something before the next one or I'll be coming home early. I suspect if you rag it then the packing blows out or burns off.
Westie driver on Sat mentioned Race-tech cans. His 200+ bhp Duratec showed 92db.
Not trying to hi-jack your post but does anyone know who supplies these?
Cheers, Pewe

well given the issues i have had getting the engine running right, it sounds like its about right then...

at least a repack kit is cheap (£20 delivered)

will let you know if it cures the rattle!

cheers

FWIW I've found that the readings given by different noise tests at different venues vary tremendously....

I usually get between 102-107 but can usually scrape thru at 105 with the addition of the Merlin motorsport bolt-on silencers...

Ignoring the possibility that the silencers are a poor quality/cheap build - could it be that the wadding is more SVA friendly in terms of silencing, but as a result just happens to have a short life?

well exhaust repacked and rattle appears to be gone
