2 litre Pinto running on bike carbs and Megajolt
I started car up this morning and the oil pressure was only running at 30psi rather than 85psi. I have checked pressure gauge and all OK. All was OK
when I last used it about 3 weeks ago. The engine was only rebuilt 2000 miles ago.
Drained sump and the oil was very thin and smelt of petrol. The catch tank was also full. I have never had to empty this before.
Bike carbs have been running at 2.5psi
I have replaced oil and filter and pressure is back up to normal so guessing that very thin oil/petrol mix causing low pressure.
Any clues as to why this is happening?

What fuel pump are you using, might be a case of too high fuel pressure which is pushing the fuel past the float valves and filling your engine with
fuel.
What carbs are they from?
As per Dave's reply, or if the engine has been running very rich it will contaminate the oil with fuel. If that's the case you run the risk
of bore washing your engine - you need to check the fuelling at part load as well as full load.
We have seen afew bike carbs with the usual drilled out main jet - this works at full load but can often mean the fuel is too rich at part load.
They are ZX9R carbs from Bogg Bros. I had it set up on a rolling road so fueling should be OK. Fuel pump is a facet.
I did leave it with a full tank of fuel so was just wondering if it has syphoned itself into the engine. But pump and regulator should stop this.
What pressure should these carbs be running at?
Phil
As has been said, fit a bike pump/filter. Some people have had no problems fitting a Facet pump/regulator, others have had lots.
I don't know of anyone having problems with a bike pump fitted to bike carbs.
Thanks for the replies. Looks like I am going to need a bike fuel pump then.
Any good suggestions where I can get a ZX9R one from?
Phil
^^ ebay or any bike breaker
you could try malc. at yorkshire engines:
http://www.yorkshireengines.co.uk/
lots of kawasaki models use the same pump - any carb'd bike around that sort of size will have a suitable pump, its just some models are meant to
be fitted in the tank and thats not idea for our cars
you might find one for £30 if your lucky but don't pay more than £50 for one
(opps - I've been a idiot and deleted my last post )
Just about all similar power bikes use the same pump, made by Mitsibushi so your options are wider to get one at a decent price. I have ZX9R carbs
but I went for the Yamaha pump instead as it comes in a nice rubber housing that makes mounting to the car much easier, the Kawasaki uses a metal
pinch clip idea that is not as good.
This kind of idea.
YAMAHA R1 FUEL PUMP
Zx9r and zx6r pumps are the same so don't get hung on a zx9. If you look at the parts fiche you will see they have the same code. May also be
used elsewhere.
