I'm sure I read something somewhere on some website that the crankcase breather apertures were the same shape for both engines.

Can anyone confirm or deny?

Not sure about the Duratec, but here's a pic of the breather mounting location on a 1998 1.6 Zetec-SE. For reference, the width is 154mm.

Does anyone know if there is an off-the-shelf blanking plate available for the SE?

Found one. Formula Ford Part No: MS06FF 6A785-AA if anyone's interested.

What threw me (and why I posed the question) is because I'd seen one for a 'Duratec' that looked a similar shape to the aperture on my Zetec SE... but I forgot that the Zetec SE name was superseded by the Duratec moniker in ithe Sigma's most recent guise! Confused!? Wish Ford would stop switching the Zetec / Duratec names around.
