iv got zxrlocost taking my car end of month to go cec to bec

Hellfire - 14/1/08 at 12:23 AM

The engine change is very rarely BEC to CEC... so all who have changed have been CEC to BEC...

Once you have the BEG (Bike engine Grin) you wont go back...

Ive got a bec turbo now, mate has a cec pinto. There was nothing to compare as the bec was much quicker before the turbo went on, i/we thought the cec was pretty fas and is against most road cars but, bec turbo is super car territory now.

NS Dev - 14/1/08 at 01:11 PM

not going to compare mine to a turbo bike engine jobbie, but having been out in both, I STILL prefer my vauxhall power to "std busa power"...........

I must emphasise that is a completely std hayabusa in a westfield which was not the lightest possible build, but my vauxhall has NO problem in any way, keeping with it, and has reverse, and is relaxed cruising in 5th gear..............

A lot of time i the BEC is spent charging up and down the gearbox. This is no bad experience as the change is nice, but in the CEC is goes just as fast if not a bit faster, with much less gearstick wobbling!!

There's no absolute answer.

I won't argue with Hellfire's point of view if he doesn't argue with mine lol!

If you want to try it, do it! I doubt you will go back, as you will find a decent BEC installation quicker than "MOST" locost CEC setups.

That's not to say that a well thought out CEC setup isn't comparable or better!

timcullen - 14/1/08 at 04:24 PM

I'm going from x/flow to r1 power and can't wait!!

zilspeed - 14/1/08 at 05:16 PM

What NS DEV said.

Up here, the most consistently succesfull sports car in sprints and hillclimbs is a Westfield powered by a 1.6 Vauxhall 16 valve. In the paddock it ticks over silently and then goes out and slays them all.
Competition includes all the usual stuff - Westfields, Caterhams, Fishers, Sylvas and most have bike engines.

BEC is a fantastic thing indeed, but it is not the only answer.

zxrlocost - 14/1/08 at 07:45 PM

surely theres more to it

a 1.6 vauxhall car slays everything ?

the only car engine to even bother my R1 car was bouldy's very nice V8 indy. my car was like a bullet to 60 and still very quick after

his car was quick then seriously powerful after 60mph

Log onto the SBD website - it's the red car on the front page. :-)

I'm told it has somewhere good of 240bhp.

I do fully appreciate that this engine probably cost more than even the most current bike engine, but our man wanted to win - and does.

As you said - horses for courses.

JoelP - 14/1/08 at 09:17 PM

i did a bec swap on my old car. I found it a little quick for road use, but i am lacking in self control. Getting out of the car giggling and shaking isnt what you really need after a trip to the shops for milk. Maybe if you are more responsible than me you wont have to drive everywhere like you're on a trackday.

One thing to bear in mind, once you do a bec swap you cant really let your friends or the missus drive it, as they are unlikely to manage the clutch or gearchange.

241bhp from a 1.6 is really going some on the bhp/litre front... in fact pretty much what you'd expect from a 1.6 litre bike engine if they made them...

ChrisGamlin - 15/1/08 at 06:28 PM

As NS Dev alluded to, a lot of CEC to BEC conversion will be from lower powered CECs (Pintos, XFlows etc) to a more powerful BEC so you do need to compare like for like.

From what Ive seen on track, if you can get around 190-200bhp out of a CEC, it will be similar overall performance to a 150-160bhp BEC in straightline performance. I think the Vx engine is good value for money in this respect and an install could probably be done at a similar cost to an R1 and give simillar performance. To get 200bhp out of a lot of other engines though (Zetec etc) seems to require some reasonable tuning investment so probably isnt as cost effective.

NS Dev - 15/1/08 at 06:37 PM

Yep, wot they said!!

There is no absolute answer.

I really wasn't sure whether to go for a hayabusa or the vauxhall engine. It came down to price, the vauxhall was cheaper for the same power to weight ratio.

I didn't count turbos as I don't like them.

Its not a cut and dried question if you do your research right.
