Its a stupid question i know but....
Im about to trade in my wife's Merc B180cdi which has averaged 44mpg over 60k miles
She really likes the new Skoda Fabia vRS which is claimed averages 46mpg combined
Based on the fact its a 7 speed auto and she drives 60 miles a day (30 each way) and she is a very good, smooth driver, how close do u think she can
get to 46
I would hate to buy it and only get 30mpg, I have looked at various reports for the Seat Cupra (as the engine is used in this too) but haven't
found a "real time" petrol consumption figure

if thats the combined figure, it depends what she drives on mostly. if its all motorway, i think she'd make it easily. if its mostly town witha
bit of motorway (or half and half) think she'll struggle. my car uses about as much petrol doing the first 5 miles through town as it does the
last 20 miles of motorway on the drive toglasgow

My Laguna used to do 30miles motorway and 25 miles on A roads and city centre.
Use to consume nearly the same on both with relaxed driving with the occasional quick getaways on runabouts.

Is the mpg on the merc calculated or just off the computer? if off computer do some 'real' tests b4 u judge the merc against proven
figures.
Having said that, my c30 'should' do 63mpg combined, but im only getting 48-50 calculated over 6 months and 8k miles.

Why not go for the Fabia vRS TDI...?
Small car, big torque, you should get very very good mpg. My old Leon Cupra TDI would easily clock 55-60mpg on motorways and top 40's early
50's on mixed driving. Keeping revs well below 2k.

Sorry if this sounds blunt, but why are you buying the highest performance model in the range if you are worried about fuel economy?

I've had my own cars for 10 years and never owned a diesel yet  (driven plenty though)
I do allot of short trips on mixed roads and as a rough guide I always seem to get real life mpg about the same as the lowest figure quoted by the

motorway - sligtly more than the book quoted 
but it also weighed less than some se7en's and had all of 45bhp so I don't think I'll talk you into one of them instead of a vRS
