Paint on bolt threads
Hi Guys,
Just had a thought.
Does painting nuts and bolt threads after assembly cause any problems at the IVA Inspection? I am painting my chassis and suspension as I am on my
final assembly (again) and have painted suspension bolts, brake connections etc..

I don't think that painting them will make any difference unless it hides their markings (if there is any doubt about their tensile rating for
example)

could always wipe some paint thinners and a cotton bud over the markings if theres any problems at IVA?

Many years ago Black Cabs had to have a special plating test every year, one of the requirements was all chassis bolts had to be painted red, so the
examiner could count them to check they were all there.

Hi again,
Markings are visable, but I was told paint on nyloc nut hardens the insert making them non locking. My theory though is the paint would stop them
spinning off.
not sure how this post ended up in the driving section and not the legal/Iva section.

It is considered good practice when re-building major components, suspension etc, to put a dab of paint on the nuts once they have been torqued up,
once finished a check that all nuts are painted, means all torques correct.
