Accident :(
I was out in the Locost an hour ago, I'd only gone a couple of hundred yards up the road and a Golf which was travelling in the opposite
direction (towards me) didn't see me and turned right across my path. I swerved to the left but couldn't avoid a crash
He hit the side of the locost starting with the front o/s wheel and smashing the rear arch, more or less avoiding anything else (except my shoulder
!).
I was doing around 30-ish before braking hard.
Things I know are broken;
Front tyre burst
Front arch scratched
Rear arch smashed into a million pieces
Rear tyre slashed
Things that might be broken;
Front sus looks bent
Rear sus could be bent, the major impact was on the o/s rear arch/wheel
Golf driver admitted responsibility immediately and was very apologetic, I have 3 witnesses who saw the whole thing.
Good points;
I'm still alive (albeit with a bruised shoulder).
It's happened now and not at the beginning of summer.
We were wanting some new narrower rear wings.
Hehe, try to look on the bright side
Anyway, what going to happen with the insurance ? I know they're supposed to repair the car to the standard it was before the accident, but
we'd want to fix it ourselves obviously. What's the best likely outcome for us to hope for ?
Thanks in advance, Tony.

Pleased you're ok Tony, that's nearly happened to me on so many occasions - just got lucky so far!
As for the insurance - can't help. Never had to claim before.

Sad news, though at least you're ok, summer is nearly over and your car can easily be fixed!
I had a mishap last year (a fight with a signpost) and ended up having to claim on the insurance just to get it home! (bloody AA..... )
Anyhoo, after speaking to the insurer they sent round an assessor who asked me to put a quote together and send it to him as he had no idea what he
was looking at. I did this happily, without taking the p1ss (well, not tooooo much) and we agreed that I would fix it myself. They were happy with
this, so long as I signed a form once they sent out the offer saying that it was totally my responsibility to make sure that the car was repaired
fully, with no comeback to them.
I charged them for my labour at a very reasonable £10/hour (mainly to sway them towards letting me do it) and charged them for things like trailer
hire twice, plus the fuel for taking the car to and from Sylva to have the chassis repaired. I actually repaired it myself....
They ended up being quite happy for me to do it as they'd rather deal with standard cars that can easily be gauged as being 'right',
rather than something that is in the eye of the beholder....
So in conclusion, speak to your insurer as you're not the first person to do this and I'm sure you won't be the last!
Feel free to give me a shout if you need any more info. By the way, I'm insured with Link if that helps?

Bad luck - glad you are OK.
I know it isn't any help now but for future reference Graham Sykes do comprehensive parts only insurance which allows you to rebuild the car
yourself after an accident.
Unsurprisingly It is cheaper as well.

I'm interested to know if you think that if you had your lights on this might not have happened?
I have been considering doing the 'volvo' thing and having my dipped lights on at all times. I was thinking it might help avoid just such
an accident. I'm just interested in whether you think it would have helped?
Glad you are OK. And now you get to 'fix' all those little niggling bits you didn't like from the first build.....

Sorry too hear the news, pleased your able too tell the tale.
Insurance ?
I was given payment too the value of parts required (assessor was great) and "payment in lui" too repair the car myself, the assessor
asked me how long it would take and would £15 an hour be ok ?
I answered ok then........

Tony, glad you're OK. I reckon tin-top drivers don't see us because we're below the level at which they normally expect to see
on-coming traffic.
I also think DaveFJ is right about the headlights on all the time.
As a biker I wouldn't feel comfortable riding with them off there are so many knobs out there who completely ignore you.
Cheers, Pewe .

Do you have an agreed value?
If it's not too high they may just pay you that and let you keep it to do the repairs. Glad to hear you came out relatively unscathed.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

Well, thanks everyone for your concern, I feel fine this morning, not even any stifness in my shoulder
Thanks for all your experiences with insurance claims, we're insured through Footman James so its not like they won't have any experience
with kits
DaveFJ, I reckon that he might have seen me if I'd had my lights on, it was a bit overcast on the road, one side of the road is adjacent to the
park and is quite gloomy due to tree coverage.
When the car's fixed, I think I'll be driving in a "volvo stylee"...
Anyway, car is now home and covered, at the weekend I think we'll SORN it, get some tax back and work towards an early summer unveiling
Cheers all

Just to echo Coose comments, I have not claimed for a "kit" type vehicle before but have for a "built up from a shell" type
before, and the insurers are actually quite helpful, it is cheaper for them to let you do the car yourself than for them to use a garage.
just get some quotes for the bits, add some extra more the inevitable miscellaneous bits, and something roasonable for your time, and you will come
out not too badly.
