Traffic survey

I keep seeing, when I am on the road, people in visi-vests sitting in chairs by the road side. The sign says "Traffic Survey". What are they actually doing, what info are they gathering that cannot be done be those electronic counters. Any ideas? Seems quite a nice job, sitting in the sun watching traffic. Barry

number of different things possible but favourite is counting number of each type of vehicle in each direction i.e. motorcycles, cars, vans, light goods, buses, heavy goods which will be split into different categories based on number of wheels / rigid articulated etc.

Info is used for traffic flow modelling.

Another common option in peak periods would be single / multiple occupancy.

Jobs for retired civil servants as they are good at counting without having to use fingers.

If they're counting occupancy then just for a laugh we should duck down as we drive by. I bet they don't have a column on their spreadsheet for 0 occupancy...
