I intend driving to the South of France (Cannes) in my Locost next September any hints or tips for long distance motoring - obvious or not I
don't mind!

just remember it's toll motorways for a good bit of France ( cost me just short of 40 euro's to go as far as Strasbourg last week )
Its a long long way even on a boring motorway at high speed - if your going off the motorways allow plenty time.
you could also try speedferries.com for your sailing - great service and cheap too ( Go from Dover to Bologne ).

Drove down in my old citroen ZX last year £55 each way in tolls got there in a day though. Can get tunnel for £98 if booked early - seems like a good
deal.

sounds like a decent deal - and no weather issues! is it flexible though..
just for your info....speed ferries are doing a super ticket for 25 quid each way just now, booked before the end of the year (and valid till end of
2005 ) - no limit on stay (10 quid to alter the dates or times)
you understand any of that?

Didn't someone on here have problems with their Locost and the between-carriage bumps on the tunnel train? One of the Le Mans travellers
maybe...
...or did I imagine it?

The one that catches most people out is fuel stations.
These take normal cards and cash during normal hours. However, during the night they only take Card Blue - no UK cards are compatible with this
system.
So - ensure you're in France early enough to get where you need to be in a day, or make sure you plan your route and prebook hotels etc on the
way

They also take cash at any time on the motorway - only ones I have come across that dont are automatic payment type pumps (like asda etc have here) -
not seen too many of them though.
As for hotel's - 'ETAP' are pretty reasonable (30 - 40 euro per room usually) and prolific

A windscreen and sidescreens might be an idea!!
And I wouldn't want to spend that length of time in a locost on a motorway - take the A roads
If you're not living life on the edge you're taking up too much room.

In Ron's book, at the back (maybe only the 2nd edition) there is the story of when him and his son went over to paris and they got stuck on the
up ramp to the ferry. Once Ron got out the suspension raised enough for it to go over though.
If your not determined to drive all the way, you could get a longer ferry down to the south of france and drive across the country. Not sure who you
can go with, but I i know you can do this to northern spain.

A bulb kit is mandatory if driving in France and will attract a decent fine if your seen with a bulb out and no replacements on board.
This is even the case on some modern cars where you need to take it to a dealer or its a good long job to change a bulb - French logic eh!

definately agree with COL about the bulbs..
but make sure you have the right kit. I bought mine on the ferry going by their spec sheet - and it wasn't right.
On my last trip I was pulled at the French/German border - I had a headlight gone. After being abrubtly told to park I went to change the bulb to find
it was the wrong one - so I just pretended to be changing it then bogged off..luckily I got away with it...

I was thinking about driving down to Monza for the GP but I think it would take far too long. Its also not that good on the motorway with the engine
screeming at 8000rpm for hours on end. I would also have to stop to fuel up every 120 miles or so.

I can see regular fuel stops being a problem as a 20 litre tank aint going to last too long. Was thinking about a 10 litre reserve tank in the boot to
give me a bit more range.
