MK Zx-12 engine coolant is hot!!!
A couple of days i've serous problems with the cooling, I read the topics to make some extra hole in the boot to get the heat out, but even
without a hood the coolant is too hot, (zx12 clocks temp. blinking) even with the fan on, is isnt capable te cool down the coolant fluid. Maybe
thermostat? or airlocks?? waterpump?? On the top of the rad its marked 'nissan' so i think its a nissan micra rad??? Please help

Have you checked the water pump is working correctly?

take it off and check it. I dont know bike engines that well, so i dont know how possible this is. Youre looking for its ability to turn freely, and
for scale on the impeller.

what sort of mesh do you have the nose, you maybe suprised at how restrictive the mesh can be even with large holes in it. (I know it got me, when I
was convinced I had a problem elsewhere)

1)how big is your rad?
2)could i it be that the rad is too small?
3)is the rad right up front in the nose cone or further back in the engine bay?
4)check the thermastat is working properly
5)check water pump is working properly,
6)check for blockages by flushing out the coolant system
7)is the header cap presurising correctly

1) radiator is a nissan micra one (possibly)
2) don't think so, car was built ans sva'd in 2002
3)in front of the nose cone
4)how can i check the working of the thermostat?
5)how can i check this?
6)how can i check and solve this?
7)it's overflow type, with little hose connected to outside.

the nissan micra rad has a much thinner core than the polo and clio units and is much less efficient.
also have you checked that the thermostat isnt stuck closed
another soultion could be to change the fan switch in the rad for one that turns the fan on at a lower temp.

even with a micra rad, you should be okay, cause youre increasing the amount of cooling so much.
do all the pipes warm up okay? just give them a wee feel with the engine running up from cold.
if you try finding a service manual, itll tell you how to test the thermostat, itll be something along the lines of putting the probe into hot water
and measuring the values with a voltmeter

At this moment the fan is switched so that it will run always, but it still get hot. I will check the thermostat this afternoon. When the coolant
indicator in dash of the original zx12 clocks indicates hot; blining. and you stand in front of the car, the fan blows cold air...

thermostat removed, and cooked... but before boiling he opened, not measured as i dont have a device for it here. So may be waterpump but if the
inside of looks fine, then still the pump can be faulty i guess, you dont know if the pump is running ???

im not sure how to check the pump is working other than checking that its the pipes all warm up, especially the engine outlet.
on the r1 engine, the water pump is accessed by the sump, its driven by the same shaft as the oil pump, so its quite a big job to get to it.
maybe if you put a section of clear tube into one of the cooling pipes so you could see if the water was flowing freely?
just an idea...

Does anyone know if the waterpump fits al years of zx12's?? Or do i need a specific year of engine built; if so how can i find out which year
the engine was coming off?

My water and oil temps were high on my 1st drive, I then made a duct to ensure all the air has to pass thru the rad, this droped the water temp from
120°C to no more than 85°C and the oil from 125°C to max 101°C even in this weekends hot weather. I'm still stunned by the massive improvement !
