Turbo inlet manifold for Vauxhall XE engine........
Right, long story but cutting to the chase, i need to make an inlet manifold for an XE engine which will be safe with 30psi of boost.
My TIG welder is broken on AC setting so I cannot weld aluminium at the moment. I have a chap locally who can do it for me BUT, I'm wondering
about making it in stainless steel anyway.
It would be a touch heavy, but then I was thinking about the thicknesses involved, and that I could do it in 1.2mm stainless, but would want at least
3mm in ally, and that then the weights become more comparable............ (still heavier in stainless but nearer)
What does everybody reckon?

Why dont you get an inlet manifold from the c20let. should bolt right on.

yep but no use, anything over about 15 psi boost and it will melt two pistons! The inlet manifold suffers very bad boost mismatch issues between
cylinders, that's why all the cars using lots of boost have fabricated inlets

iirc the SR20DET manifold has been used before.
Ok, missread
Inlet.

Hm.. standard boost on a LET is over 15psi, so I don't really think thats a fair comment.
If you use a fabricated tophat it'll help flow to those cylinders too. The standard one is biased.
2 and 3 piston issues are also due to the location of the turbo, making that area very hot.

10 psi is standard on these engines.

Its been a few years since I actually drove mine, memory is a bit rusty.
Standard is 10-11psi on OB, I'd forgotten mine has p2 so is 15 standard and 18 OB.

standard is 8psi with 10ob, ph2 is 16psi with 18 ob.
Mismatch isnt related to boost level but flow, s engines use other inlets over a certain power.
Ive seen 350bhp made on a standard inlet.

Well, easy answer to the above discussions, we already have an XE making 400hp or so, which melted 2 + 3 until we made an inlet.........
however, that was made when my tig would weld ally, now the balance control won't work (well its not got one its fixed and fixed wrong! ) and I
can't afford to replace or fix it at the moment.
So.........is a stainless inlet a sensible idea of should I just sub the welding out and do it in ally?
(PS, the exhaust manifold in the pic from ebay is an XS Power one and sadly they fall apart, again speaking from experience! )

Yep, sorry, I did really mean that it was a flow imbalance but didn't really explain myself very well!
cheers

A lot of the cossie guys use the so called swedish plenum over the original backplate which is just a folded welded cover.
Something like that would be easy enough in stainless.
Another option is the nissan sunny gtir plenum which are cheap and cast allow as here:
http://www.vauxhall-sport-forum.com/phpBB2/c20let-westfield-project-t2570,start,60.html
Inn both cases the difficulty is the balckplate. Easy enough to fab something up from carb trumpets and tubes I suppose but comes back to your easier
in ally than stainless!!
