More tyre opinions...
If I were to change my t1-r for something a little bit more sticky what choices have I got? size is 225/45/17
Black circles have a good offer on bridgestone re050a at the minute at £90 each.
I'm not really after r888's as it'll be 70% road driving and they're too expensive. The car should weigh about 650ish kg and
300bhp.
So apart from the t1r's/re050a what other choices would be good?

Uniroyal rainsports 2 are excellent. Might be slightly soft for a 1.5 ton car on track but on anything less than a ton I bet they would be
excellent.
On the road they perform brilliantly, common sense limits grip.

How about the new R1r Toyo?
At 70% on road use, that leave's 30% track use which is quite a lot. I'd be putting 888's on.

i have t1rs on my indy and they are great wet or dry
then i have tirs on the front of my new astra and re50a's on the back and the r's are superior tyre

I've got to clear my brakes too!
its only a can of worms if your 17" wheels are heavy, not an issue if they're lighter than most 14"
ETA the R1R seems like a very good idea...

Not entirely.
Sidewall flex is hugely significant.
On what is a pretty light car with relatively stiff suspension, sidewall flex is not a bad thing and is a major factor in allowing the car to work.
I give you these examples of lap times of the capabilities of a Pinto powered mid engined car racing car on 13" slicks versus an R888 shod
Cosworth powered car.
I know they're not the same thing at all, but I'm attempting to show the capabilities of the humble 13" tyre in a low powered car -
140bhp or so - versus a turbocharged car of 300bhp or so with bigger tyres.
Anyway - 1:42.662 vs 1:33.129
The good time is the Pinto car on 13" wheels.
I know my logic is utterly flawed, but I stand by it anyway. We don't need more than a 13" wheel.
It's where most people eventually end up
after messing about with bigger stuff.
P.S. your wheels are 4" too big, not 5".

I understand what your saying however I've also seen cars on 17" road tyres go quicker than 13" on slicks.... obviously driver
ability! As above though I couldn't fit anything smaller than 15" too.

286mm discs, calipers obviously add a larger diameter, the braking set up has proven to work very very well so at the minute i'm just thinking
of getting a good base set-up so when its on the road I can just use the car for a year or so before looking at further mods, well apart from getting
it properly set up(geo/corner weights etc).
The R1R's seem like a very good compromise, i'll have to look at how much I can get for my current t1r's if I did look at changing.

286 are not particularly big so certainly 15" would fit over them and possibly 14".

I had a measure and I know 14" will not due to the MK5 golf calipers on the rear on the custom uprights.... maybe I should triple check!

There is a few options out there very similar to the R1R to look at
Bridgestone RE-11
Yoko AD08
Dunlop Z1 Star Spec
and Kumho Ku36
There is a couple of good reviews around for this set of tyres too

I really don't rate the T1R, RE040, RE050
However the RE070 is a different tyre altogether, not so hot now the winter months are coming, but a great dry tyre!!

I know you're some what limited by brakes but the price difference between 13" and 17" tires is significant. Just a quick look on
Camskill was coming in around £40+ per tire for the sticky stuff! So maybe a second set of wheels for the track tires which also means you'll
get lots more track time from them.
That's how I used my car with two sets of 14" wheels.
