123-reg Nightmare

I've used 123-reg for domains for sometime...

Suddenly in November last year money was taken from my Paypal account for a domain renewal I had intended to let lapse. Only then do I discover that my Paypal account had a standing payment authorisation from 123-reg from a different domain I'd only just regisitered.

123-reg had decided to use Paypal across my domains and take out money whenever they fancied. I disputed it both with themselves and Paypal but didn't get the money back and have a domain for another year that I don't want.

I've just gone to alter some forwarding details - only to find my 123-reg account has been disabled and they want £12.50 admin fee to resurrect it. Why - because apparently me questioning the Paypal debacle was a "payment irregularity"

Needless to say they won't be getting another penny from me!

I am absolutely fuming with rage. I'm normally very placid but this has just made my blood boil...

My advice would be not use them ever. I will not type out my true feeling on a public forum!

Sorry guys just needed to vent!

Any suggestions for a decent and above board domain registrar?

How annoying, use 123reg myself, only for domain registation normally, although dads currently using them to host a site, not issues to date but that would nark me a lot. Only other site i use is namescheap as they offered a cost effective method of whois optout for a .net name.

I use GoDaddy. Good but not the cheapest.

My colleague uses 1&1 who do seem very Locost.

HTH

And thanks SeaBass. I'll avoid 1-2-3.....

Seems to be a UK based company, so complain to Ofcom.
By the way, you can't just let a domain lapse, you have to cancel it or they will just keep taking the money.

Same here. Nonetheless, still grateful for the early warning, and for the suggested alternatives.

Bullcrap. You register a domain for a set length of time. If you chose not to take action it lapses.

On what authority can anyone "just keep taking the money"

I used 123-reg for a goodly number of years both for my own site and for my customers sites.

I stopped using them when they ignored letters from me about the double payment for my domain for about 5 years. Never got an answer and never got my money back, so I abandoned them and have never gone back. I moved all my customers away from them as well.

Their loss is someone else's gain.

Indeed.

Which is certain the impression you get from the "give us money now or you will loose you domain name forever, money money money, now now now...." type emails you get a month, week and day before it expires.

I use Easily.co.uk.

It was reccomended to me by a work colleague who manages 25,000+ domains plus our external customers Domain Names as well.
He has been a domain manager and registrant for 15+ years, and very definitely knows what he is on about.

I have not had any problems with Easily in over 15 years.
Also you can talk to them on the Phone, which is a BIG plus point.
I have two domains with them and they have been very good.

They email me asking me to renew my domains. I then pay using my card. Simple enough for me.

What every you do, do NOT register with any comapny that registers your Domain in their name, and then tries to hold you to ransom when you try to shift your hosting to another company. Less scroupulous companies register it in their name NOT yours, then they own the Domain name and let you use it. YOU need to be the Named Owner of the Domain.

Its amazing what you learn when you sit opposite someone like him for 15+ years! (oh... and I did not work for Easily either!)

Just my 2d's worth.

1. The point of a journey is not to arrive.
2. Never take life seriously. Nobody gets out alive anyway.

I'd avoid 1&1 too! I had major problems, like you. I had actually cancelled a domain, and then made sure I cancelled the direct debit. Next thing I know I have debt collectors phoning and sending letters for £7.13 or something stupid. 1&1 refused to communicate stating they had 'sold the debt'. I was really annoyed as I've never defaulted a mortgage or loan payment in my life! I took advice in the end and ignored every letter they sent. 2 years later the debt collectors gave up. 1&1 would never ever get a recommendation from me, not in a million years!!! Bunch of tossers.

So I phoned them today at work. I was transferred once from a mumbler and the eventual guy on the phone sounded sheepish and intimidated - I was NOT abusive but asked some basic questions.

He could not provide his full name or employee reference (ready for it - data protection mwlol), he could not provide details of the head of customer service I could write to - in fact he claimed there was no management structure!

Turns out I currently have 6 domains managed (or not!) by them.

They are refusing to assist me to transfer my domains to another registrar and keep trying to get me to pay the £12.50 charge.

Does anyone involved with domain registration know if this is legal or against a code of conduct?

I think I'll contact nominet next.

Nerys - I appreciate the stunning PR exercise but there's nothing to look into. The simplest solution is that you reinstate my account so I can manage domains I've paid for.

One such domain is jamescollin.co.uk

Steve - I'll let you know if anything comes of it... similar threads on the web have suddenly seen a "123reg employee" and have come to nothing. I've been doing my research.

Amazing -

I've had a phonecall from 123-reg and my account has been reinstated.

I'll leave it at that.
