From what I can gather it is the Fisher Price version of Windoze designed for touch screens.
If you can keep you head, whilst all others around you are losing theirs, you are not fully aware of the situation

I stuck it on one of the work laptops to try it out. Not that keen. To me it looks like they have just made the start menu a whole screen. The only
good bit is the roaming online profile that loads your favourites email etc if you log in on your mates pc with your email and password. That's
if you want all your intermediate details stored on a Microsoft server somewhere out in cyber space.

I tried Win 8 Beta, but used an add-on that brings back the Start menu button and lets you configure things much more like Windows 7. A quick Google
should find it. It was originally able to force booting straight to the desktop, but Microsoft disabled that registry function - maybe they've
got around that now?

Years ago I heard that News International stayed with Win 3.11 and only ditched it when Wndoze 2000 was introduced. There is a moral in there
somewhere I think!

There is no point in moving to windows 7
Windows 8 is quicker and smoother and uses less resources to do the same things
You're probably struggling with the 'Metro' desktop
Use that cnet link and all should be well

The guy I charge of Windows 8 development has just left Microsoft very suddenly without any proper explanation.

i cant even find how to turn the machine off.
I was that pissed off with it tonight i pulled the plug from the wall!!
I am happily writing this from my home PC running 7 - much less stressful

from my 'no pressure' shot of it today, its different, very different, so under pressure to get work done yeah it will be a bit hard.
stick with it, its every bit as as good as 7 or XP (i still use XP) but you can get to the normal desktop somehow, i just can't remember
exactly, but its easy when you know how. shutting down is in the top left corner of the screen somewhere
thats where i got that from, i was adamant to use it lol

I love it, I have been running it for about 6 months it takes a week of getting used to then you realise it does alot of stuff slightly better,
quicker and uses less battery
some very handy shortcuts:
win Key + c = brings up the charms (selecting setting will take you to the power options)
win key + x = shortcut menu to command prompt, and other admin stuff
win key + D = desktop shortcut

My wife's 2 year old Dell laptop went kaboom last night (okay it didn't it just died with a fizzle). Apparently it's a common
problem on the 5010 model which to fix requires the entire thing taking apart and the GPU reflowing with a heat gun and even then it fails a little
while afterwards. That laptop did always get stupidly hot and sound like a F16 on reheat so I think there's a tiny problem with over-heating.
Dell are refusing to admit there's a problem despite forums full of people having to wield heat guns so they can bog off and I'll never
buy one of their computers again. Sorted.
So anyway, off to PC World for a Compaq laptop. All of the laptops are lumbered with Windows 8.
What a pile of shite.
Considering whenever you switch it on you'll want to switch it off again it seems bizarre to make shutting down a 4 click process instead of a 2
click process. And WTF with not being able to play DVDs? Okay so I can install LVC but that's not the point. I wondered if Microsoft had taken
their anti-trust thing a bit far and banned WMP but it's still there, just crippled. I note IE10 is rammed down my throat without choice- so
much for the "Browser Choice" window that Microsoft promised they'd start using again after it got accidentally removed by a service
pack update!
It is a bit embarrasing really.
If it wasn't for the fact that the old laptop had a Dell OEM Windows 7 key, 8 would be going straight into the bin.

I've just bought a brand new desktop off a guy on here, PC is excellent, but jumping from Window XP to Windows 8 is a right ballache!!!
I'm telling myself, all will be fine when I have got used to it. (I wonder why Jossey also supplied a copy of Windows 7!!!!).
I'm bearing with it for a while (old PC is also still running next to it) until I either
(a) get to grips with Windows 8
(b) throw it out the window
(c) install windows 7
