205 GTI off to look this weekend
Well, my 205 GTI has been dry stored by my dad.
Not being able to drive until August 2016 gives time for reflection and a possible rebuild. I'm off to look at it this weekend and see how
committed I am to it. A rebuilt car would be a joy, but some cash in the bank would also be nice as well.
On the +ve side a rebuilt 205 GTI will be fun, keep my hands oily and a reason to drive again

I miss mine. Brilliant fun cars to drive and simple to work on - an added bonus that they are now appreciating which must be nice. Is yours fairly
stock Nick? If you rebuilt, would you do any upgrades, e.g. MI16 or GTi-6 swap?

We need photos! I'd love a 205 GTi in the collection, ideally Mi16 converted.

One rebuild item is the engine. An Mi16 would be nice, but TBH a standard engine seems to be worth more these days.

It is my 3rd such car and yes driving was a different game in those days, less traffic and more space.

One of my worries with the engine work is wet liners and disturbing/reseating them - I think if it's worth doing it better be done fully!

I had a few 205GTis but preferred the 309. I had a few of them too.

Always saw the 309 as a 205 with a dodgy boot

miss mine too, had a 1.6gti,. it was standard as standard, sounded great and was brilliant fun to drive.
used to spend a lot of time grinning,. also had a stupidly huge boot for such a small car!

They were practical in the boot area, helped by the rear torsion beam setup, which gave a flat boot floor.

Recently purchased myself a gti6 car to run about in. Great reliving my early 20s again.
Needs rear beam raised and a few polybushes fitted and a good tidy up. Diesel 5th too would be nice. 1.6 box is quite buzzy on the motorway. Group N
engine mounts are great.
Exhaust knocks on the floor idling stone cold. The dash rattles. I had to dye the bumpers black. It needs paint.
But i feckin love it.
Never gonna be original so awfy tempted to do some real individual stuff. If the engine goes bang it's having a v6 stuffed up it's chuff.

My first two were 1.6s, great fun to be in and around!

I prefered the 1.6 to the 1.9, seemed like a terrier, up and at em.
Would have another like a shot if i'd the space and the missis wasn't looking, although i'm not sure if my nipper could cope with
the lift off oversteer these days on the road.
There were a few times where i'd overstepped the mark and ended up facing the wrong way (luckily without twatting anything).
Ah to be a 'boy' racer again....

Me too, the 205 was frantic fun but the 309 seemed to handle better, more stable.

Well if we're talking v6's and 306's I still have this stashed away to one day be put back on the road...
Testing again... my cabrio!
It's got a 3.0 v6 from a 406 coupe stuffed in it.

Had a 1.6 and a 1.9 205 GTI and the 1.9 is the only car I ever regret selling
Always used to cheer me up after a bad day at work and in the wet on the standard michelins was more than a bit entertaining

I had the 309 1.9 GTi and was reliably informed that the little bit of extra weight behind the wheels made it better on the limit
I still ran out of talent and had to rebuild it though.

The 309gti runs a wider track too than the 205 front and rear

I had one, cheaply made, noisy fan but you could kick it to make it shut up, lots of nasty plastic.....
XR3i was a much built car IMHO

A popular mod on the 205 is to fit 309 wishbones and rear beam to get the wider track.
Personally I put it down to driving it more and learning when/where it gives up.
