to be fair, the speed limit isn't changing, only the enforcement of that limit.

Is it? I thought that a 70 MPH speed limit meant that you could go no more than 70 MPH. Many police forces allow a margin for error but I'm not so sure that they have to.

Whatever the limit is on the sign you can usually get away with +10%. This is the margin of error that you are technically allowed, but it is up to the officer (I know people who have had tickets for doing 43 in a 40).

The 10% guideline was down to the accuracy of the old speedos on cars which were +/-10%. Obviously now speedos arent allowed to read under the actual speed...

Thats how i understood it anyway.

the 10 % is an acpo guideline but as with most guidelines they choose to ignore it in this instance.

It was and still is 10% +3 mph - unless you are in a Zero Tolerance Policing zone.
Gatso and Truvello also don't trigger unless you are doing 37 or over, unless you are also in a Zero Tolerance Policing Zone.

apparently may 1st (coincidence for stoneleigh) is some sort of safety awareness day, with bad news for speeders... worth being aware of.

pat, i thought that the 10% +4 was an urban legend, first said by FHM - are you sure its fact?!

I'd say the worst place to speed was in a built up area?

My personal policy is keep to the 30's and 40's - and I do mean keep to them, not +/-5mph - and usually 50's if the area is built up. Anything else is fair game.

Whilst I'm posting, what really gets on my nerves is people who say I'm a bad driver because I'll happily cruise at 90-100mph on a clear motorway. Strange that it always seems to be the same people that think they are safe because they do 45-55mph wherever they go. It's not safe to do that speed on the motorway these days and it's certainly not suitable for a residential area!

Anyway, rant over

Yep - 10% +3 - unless you are in a Zero Tolerance Zone.
Will double check tomorrow though.
Strangely enough, new job is at the Police station compared to working at the Magistrates' like I do now!
