Help with Escort Mexico
Looking at this car tonight. Seems alot of money but if it is an orig Mexico would it be worth what he wants? Seems steep to me.

dash is wrong, rats have had the seats,"revs off the clock" should give you a clue as to the current owner,a lot of rust can appear after
12 years.
have a look on rs owners site, they normally have a list of reg/chassis no,s to see if its genuine, somehow i doubt it tho.
ps my shopping trolly will be up for grabs soon
who cares who wins

find it suspect that he states he's "told it's a type 49 shell"
that's not the type of car you just see on a forecourt and decide to buy as a run around.
lads on the rsoc would tell you how to check the chassis number to see if it's genuine or not. if it's a real one then the price
isn't really that bad, seen mint ones go for up to 8k and even a bog standard 2 door mk1 is fetching decent money these days cos everyone wants
them for replicas
built a car, built a home, had a family. lost the family, lost the home, still got the car.

have read up on a few websites and it's going to be impossible to know whether it's a real one so i'm going to leave well alone plus
if he's reving it off the clock then it's going to have been driven hard. Also i know the are and it's not the best place to buy a
used motor..know what i mean!!

A friend of mine had a 1300 sport and the interior looked like that only tidier. He fitted Capri front struts to upgrade the brakes. "told
it's a type 49 shell", if he doesn't know whether it's an uprated shell or not I wouldn't trust his description of the
rest of it
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

If it does have a steel bottom end then it will be well capable of reving off a Mexico rev counter as they only go to 7000rpm. For the spec it is well
worth the money, if it is a genuine Mexico.
I know where there is an original 1970 Mexico in a garage with 3000miles on it. The owner fell out of his hotel window in Malta three months after
buying it and was badly injured, including some brain damage. Although he has never been able to drive since he is still convinced that one day he
will get better and will not allow his brother to sell the car. It sits in an adjoining garage, so it's dry and relatively warm, and does
nothing. I tried to make an offer, but was told that there's no way he'll give up his dream. Fair play.

IIRC the Mexico had an 8K rev counter. Or was that just the twincams, RS1600's & RS2000's?
Also the speedo should go up to 140MPH as opposed to the more usual 110MPH found on the lesser variants.
I should have thought this car to be over priced. Even if it is a genuine Type 49 shell, there isn't too much of the car thats original.

Twinks and RS1600's had the 140mph and 8000rpm dished clocks, RS2000 had 130mph and 7000rpm clocks and everything else had 110mph 7000rpm
clocks. Last set of RS1600 clocks I sold went for £140.
If it is a steel bottom end then the crank will have been £1200 minimum and the rods £150 each, so £1800 there, £200 for the 40s, plus the rest of the
engine work. Call it £2500. It's been firewalled and turreted at the rear, probably another £500s worth of work, and a slipper at another £400,
and to be honest it doesn't look that bad for the money. Factor in if it's a real Mex then it's quite a bargain if it's in any
sort of decent nick. Not that it's legal or anything, but I've sold Mexico log books for £300 and what I'd consider scrap Type 49
shells for £500.
Go and have a look first, definately, as his lack of knowledge about the Type 49 shell does ring a few alarms, but he might just be a rich idiot who
bought one 'cause his dad had one.
I'd have another Mk1 Escort tomorrow, but the wife isn't keen and I get demorallised welding up the rusty old things that I can afford,
hence the Locost being built now out of the remnants of my last Mk1 (a fairly harmless 1100 Deluxe fitted with a 1300 all steel crossflow on 45s,
coilover Billies at the front with Wilwoods, tramp bars and single leafs with turreted Billies at the back, quickrack, and a set of now very rare
Wolfrace turbos.
