Why is Kazakhstan been given 7 whereas UK is 44??!?!
Surely we should be 2 or 3 at most?!?!?!

An interesting observation, but have you considered it the other way around?
Perhaps the higher the number the better...? who has 1 as their international code?

One thing that is truly appalling is the short hand way that people refer the this country i.e. the UK that makes me sick
It's GREAT BRITAIN!

Err actually it's the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland
so the UK is the whole part, and GB is England Scotland and Wales.
Sorry I'm being picky

And why should we have the pomposity to refer to ourselves as Great Britain.
Being English, I prefer England (no deference to the Scots, Irish or Welsh BTW)

My sister, admittedly when aged around 10, claimed green chisps gave you spina bifida. Just goes to show...
p.s USA and Canada share +1

According to my list 7 is the Russian Federation.
I always thought that Ian Fleming gave James Bond his 007 number because that was the dialling code for Russia.

Boring answer - it goes back to the time when this kingdom went from the Scottish border down to the south of France (Norman kings). The was a
province known as Little or Lesser Britain (in French, of course!) on the north coast of France - now known as Brittany - and the other, larger
province over the water was called Great Britain.

I couldn't give a monkey's about dialing codes (even though some people on here hang monkeys!)
I always put English when it comes to the question about nationality on forms and given the choice I would have been a so called convict and would
have been blowing raspberries at the UK now calling meself an Aussie
All i know is it all started here in my little town. And I'm fairly proud of that

I used to work for BT International doing statistical modelling and capacity planning. There's really no logic to the International dialling
codes and how they are allocated. Safest bet is wherever you are dial + rather than 00 to get an International route, works pretty much everywhere
apart from a few notable exceptions.
UK 'dircetor' exchanges were easy to allocate, for example Ewell in Surrey is a 393 or 394 number scheme, swap the numbers for letters on
the key pad or dial and you get 393 = EWE, the first 3 letters of Ewell on your keypad. Doesn't work for non director telephone exchanges like
01737 Reigate.
Each scheme had it's advantages.
Sorry for being a telephone bore.

that is the wrong attitude and leads to this kind of thing happening. had we had an uprising I am sure we could have easily made the top 10.
In my mind I still picture Britain as on the globe behind Mr Mr Cholmondley-Warner but in reality I gueess we are rapidly heading to thrid world
status.

Ha ha you're wrong!
90 is Turkish Cyprus granted, but 392 is the city/town code so that cant count in this game

i see what you mean but then I am not an internation dialing code spotter like you.
presumably carribean islads starting with 1 count as an area of USA.
Therefore the highest code found in my diary is 994 for Azerbaijan.
So seems the 999 for police may indeed be the highest after all - many a true word spoken in jest it seems.

Well given the ever increasing litigious state of our society perhaps you could try to sue BT for wear and tear on the 4 button on your phone and they
might change it then.

Great Britain is the name of the big island that is home to England, Scotland and Wales.

International Dailing Codes
Canada and the USA are number 1, because a chap named Alexander Graham Bell, a Canadian citizen invented the telephone, while a resident of the
Excited States of America.
And just to keep the fight going, he was born in Scotland.
The first digit of the VIN number of cars built in the US is 1, the first digit of cars built in Canada is 2, hence there are a lot of Americans
driving foreign cars.

Well it depends which website/TV show you watch on whether it was Bell or Antonio Meucci
and a quote from wikipedia
quote:
Meucci was recognised as the first inventor of the telephone by the United States House of Representatives, in its resolution 269 dated 11 June 2002
("if Meucci had been able to pay the $10 fee to maintain the caveat after 1874, no patent could have been issued to Bell".
