SORN
Does any one know when SORN came in?
I'm looking at the car below, it's been off road for years. Was the date of liability before you had to declare SORN, the owner says he
has never done it.
Any likely comebacks for me or him if I buy it and register it in my name (prior to using it as a doner)?
From DVLA enquirey.
The enquiry is complete
The vehicle details for *** ***J are:
Date of Liability 01 03 2002
Date of First Registration 04 09 1970
Year of Manufacture 1970
Cylinder Capacity (cc) 1298CC
CO2 Emissions Not Available
Fuel Type Petrol
Export Marker Not Applicable
Vehicle Status Unlicensed
Vehicle Colour RED
Vehicle Type Approval null
The information contained on this page is correct at the time of enquiry.

no, don't worry about it. I had several cars that the DVLA never asked for. No fines or any comments from them when I did bother to tell them.
Anyhow they have the date of change of ownership cos you tell them so why would they ask you to pay? Buy the car, tax or SORN it, then scrap and
inform them that you’ve done so, helps if you send them a picture.

As above - once you register it in your name it logs the date you took ownership. If you Sorn at same time you will be covered. Just be mindful that
you should get Sorn notification / confirmation within 4 weeks. If you dont do it again. I nearly fell foul of that. It would appear DVLA dont like to
multi-task sometimes (or should that be any-task) I only found out when no reminder was recieved 12 months later.
Just thinking - get a reciept from the owner even if it says car is crap and scrap. The date is key. Then keep copies of leters etc and maybe send
recorded if you want to be doubly sure.

SORN came in 31 January 98.
If the car has been on the road after that date Sorn must be declared. The previous owner should have done so and has been committing an offence! DVLA
could fine him if it was able to tell it's bum from its elbow. You must declare SORN, ideally at the same time as you do the change of ownership
stuff.

if you buy it and delcare it sorn straight away, the v5 will be updated by sending the relevant parts off, and it shows the date you bought the car,
therefore not your liability

don't write OT on a new thread title, you're creating the topic, everything you write is very much ON topic!

I've bought pre-SORN cars which have not been used / taxed after SORN was introduced. You do not have to SORN these cars - in fact you
can't! I sent a sorn notification when I applied for a replacement V5C and they returned it an stated that it was not required.

I bought my car when it was a part built. Sent the V5 off to get the donor reistered in my name, so I could get an age related plate, three years on
registered it, never heard a dicky bird from DVLA.
My thought is don't stick a stick into a wasps nest if you don't want to get stung.

Thanks for that, very much as I thought.
I think I'll register in my name and SORN it at the same time.
