Crossflow Cams

Hello,

Trying to decide which cams I should use, I currently have piper 285, trying to work out if i'm better off with kent 234/244 or the piper 300.

Piper recon 2500-7500rpm for the 285, and 3000-8000 for the 300.

The kent 234 comes on cam at 2000-7200, and the 244 is 3000-8000.

So it would seem that 244 and 300 have a similar profile, any idea which one is the better of the two?

It then comes down to if i want to have a bit more power lower down, in which case the 234 would be the sensible choice.

Puma racing recommend the 234, but i'm rather used to the 285 which has has a real kick around 3000rpm.

Its for a 1660 crossflow, stage 3 head, the pistons have cut outs for larger valves, lightened crank, and bike carbs. Bottom end is arp bolted.

8000rpm is a bit scary for a crossflow - i'd be worried about thrashing it that hard, i plan on having a hard limit at 7200, so it really comes down to kent 234, or piper 285 unless you recon it can take 8000 rpm?

Oh decisions, decisions.

Depends wether you are road or race?
The 3000+rpm band is best for racing as the car will be as lumpy as hell at idle and will need lots of revs when you pull away.
It all depends what you want to live with.

Its for road use, which would suggest the 285/234 would be better, any idea what the differences between the two are?

Cheers

I'm going with the Caterham option, ie 244. There's plenty around and seems to be a proven cam in a 7. I don't see many of them revving to 8k though, but the lumpiness at low revs will be offset slightly in a lighter car

I use a 244 in my striker with no probs at all.
Nice 'kick'from 300 onwards.

Always choose a milder cam than the one you think you need --- applies even for a full race engine.

does the BP285 or KC244, need any machining to the pistons?

I used a 244 with big valves and throttle bodies on my last crossflow - it pulled hard to 8000 , and was super torquey (165 f/lbs ) , but the revs meant regular servicing included piston rings and crank shells............but I did do a lot of miles , and thrash it a lot

Its cuz I is blond , innit

The 285 dedinitly doesnt, (at least not with standard valves) not so sure about the 244 - in theory not, but it will be tight.

i thought the 244 did need machining.

I'd have thought the 234 would have been best ..... then again fitting the zetec you've got in the corner would be even better!
