Heater which what how

I've been thinking about what and how I'm going to fit a heater.

I'm told that VW polo ones are good.
Has anyone got one they could measure for me please?

What other heaters have people fitted?

I'm also tempted to make my own.
Alloy box with the matrix fitted inside
fitted inside the scuttle with four pipes coming off it, two for the screen and two down to the footwells heater fan fitted to the outside of the scuttle pumping air through the alloy box etc.
Again can anyone recommend a heater fan small but powerful?

Any ideas appreciated.

Current issue of one of the kit-car magazines has a article on fitting a heater
(think it's a Mini one).

I have a mini heater going spare if it's any good to anyone? Cost me £25. I think it is all OK but I had a change of plans so I never fitted it.

If your budget can stand it, CBS do a really compact & powerful one

I fitted a Mini one, £10 from a scrapper. pretty easy, sits on the top of the tunnel, but I had to set it foreward through the bulkhead an inch or so, as it was a bit long

If you could measure your heater that would be most useful.

I used a mini heater in a previous kit car and found it next to useless.
At the time I made a box fitted with a matrix from a Sierra and the Sierra fan.
still a bit bulky though.

I think the CBS heater is to expensive.
I dont know how mant different ones they sell but I saw a write up about one of them on another site and the bloke just slagged it off,claiming it was good at demisting the screen but nothing else.

The CBS unit is rated at 4.5kW and I would have thought you could do a bit more than demist a windscreen with it. A lot depends on the ducting and vents used thought. Although I havent had a chance to try it out yet the fan is certainly powerful - knocks the spots off a Mini unit thats for sure (tried one but it was useless) . It is a twin squirrel cage jobby and I am ducting one side to bring fresh air into the cabin and help reduce misting that way.
