Can anyone see any issue with powder coating the steel mushroom inserts?
Will it cause any problems with the fit into the upright and the ball joint taper?
Cheers
Nick
I wouldn't, are they steel or ally, if steel have them zinc plated, I think the powder coating would eventually break away leaving your insert free to do a runner ?
Steel....plating could be an option I guess.
Polish the upper surface to a mirror finish, the plating will go on like chrome.
You could mask off the taper and the mating face to the wishbone and powder coat the rest. It isn't a part that is exactly visible, so perhaps just paint. Or buy some alloy ones.
As its a friction fit, its best not to put a layer of melted powder in between the metal surfaces.
You could however drill through the lot and use some form of retention, bolt or wire
I wouldnt coat it, as has been mentioned, if the coating comes off it might allow the thing to slip.....
A true story:
A helicopter operator sent several robinson R-44 helicopters off to be repainted by a third party..
As per the tech guide, the various bits of the aircraft bodywork were stripped off and all painted...
The aircraft was then re-assembled and returned to the owner in a shiny and pretty state...
Several months later whilst flying along, the rear tail superstructure dropped off....
The aircraft crash landed and was written off....
The aircrash investigators found that the painters had misread the tech guides and had painted the mating surface of the tail fit to tail boom
surface...
The bolts had been retorqued securing the parts together, but as the parts vibrated together the coating came out basically allowing the nuts to
vibrate off....
NOT GOOD!
Woa...that was a long story...
right - no powder coating then
rust will suffice
i heated mine up cherry read and dunked them in old engine oil a few times, now there nice and black looking.
But heating them up and dunking them in oil will add carbon to the mushrooms and harden them. You now have brittle mushrooms!
