The second hand silvertop that i picked up off ebay is a bit smokey so i'm looking at other engines. Possibly Blacktop Duratec or Bike engine.

Don't see the point of the vote, its fairly individual.
Having owned a ZX9R Striker and now driving a ST170 MNR theres years of difference....
In that I'm a dodery old codger day to day in me Rover then cannot wait to get out in my CEC, its civilised in the 30's then the VVT kicks
in above 4K and is off like a scalded cat and it does 40mpg...
Mine is 99% road use so the car engine make sense and was MUCH cheaper than installing a bike engine.
IF I was building a track day car, a bike engine would have been first choice....

BEC!! only way to go! sooo much faster,lighter easier to put in, sounds gorgeous, 6 gears of sequential speed, lovely to work on...the list goes on...
mmhh...this is an easy one....you see bike engines go into bikes because this is where they belong.......whatever next? how about CESS, car engined space shuttle. However i do have a interesting project on the go ive extracted the engine from my scalextric car and have fitted it to my core drill...but of course its useless

i must say that i dont get the no torque reason, my r1 engine has enough grunt to out accelerate my neibours focus st turbo thing which is around 250hp , in 6th gear at 40mph all the way to 130ish, having said that next time i build i might go for a honda s2000 lump or a supercharged mr2 motor

But thats what your tintop is for - day to day!! To me, the kit car is a novelty item, a toy plain and simple. I dont want it to be practical, quiet, civilised or return good mpg (the greens can hate me if they want). Mine's going to be for a couple of hour thrash on a sunny evening / Sunday, to forget any worries and to put a huge smile on my face. its a difficult 1 to answer as there are so many variations. mine has an R1 engine and i love it. but whilst i was at mnr last week i saw an mnr with
s2000 lump and dry sump.it looked awesome but is a very expensive installation!

Bike engines are often quoted on lack of torque.
If you use the power from the primary gears it a different matter.
IE my ZX12R has 98ft/lbs from the crank at 7500rpm.
Simple maths converts the 98 x 1:6) to 156ft/lbs at 4680rpm going into the gear box.
So I believe it's the torque actually going to the wheels that counts.
As for drivability, in traffic easy. coming out of a bend and not going sideways no so easy
And the most obvious thing I see, is bike makers spend milloins on performace and cars makers don't.
For example our family MPV.
Whos needs a indicator on the dash to say thats it's freezing outside.
Just imagine if Yamaha made a car engine with the technology of the 2009 R1 engine.
2litre V8 reving to 12000rpm producing 360bhp.
So CEC if you like to potter about , the wind gently blowing through your hair(if you have any) and like to use every day like a tin top.
BEC if like ragging it to death at 12000 revs plus, having the time of your life for a couple of hours at the weekend and using it as a toy.
no torque? i was out for a blast with my friend in his impreza sti, he only got away when he did about 130.
no offence, but you dont buy a 7 for a quiet and easy to live with car...the noveltys have never worn out, even in the rain!
and i drive mine almost every day...in fact...im off to show up some cecs by doing some 6th gear acceleration...wait...they dont have 6 do
they...aaw!
you would need to build 3 car really !

1 bec
and then another bec to make it quicker than the last one !
ive done 5 cars now and its BEC all the way for me
but a cec would be nice for taking the wife/chick out !! and a bec just for the noise speed and the big GRIN

I'm happy building my second CEC. It is still a light motor and light gearbox - for a CEC, and various other lighweight items mean weight should not be too high. I've ridden enough bikes for enough yeays to think they really don't last brilliantly when hammered - in a bike - so not sure I want lower reliability. CECs are even less stressed than before so that makes me a lot more comfortable. Are there not a lot of bike engine reliability issues on this site? BEC owners asking about suitability on long drives??
It got to be duratec. Reliable, easy to get parts for, revvy, and quick! what more do you want.

Plenty, and there are also plenty of reliability issues from the CEC side too so its not exclusive to BEC's.
