Is he talking cobblers ?
zilspeed - 13/2/10 at 10:49 AM

So, there's a Sylva Leader for sale on ebay.
Apparently the 1860cc CVH in it makes 210bhp.
That's very strong for a CVH, I would have thought.

He also reckon's it's done a 58.3 at Loton with it.

For reference, here's a Caterham Superlight 'R' doing 57.07, so apparently the sylva is within an imperial baw hair (as we say in Scotland) of this time.
Caterham doing 57.07

What do we reckon ?

Genuine, or again as we say in Scotland, 'haverin'.

Zil - now listening to Sunshine On Leith by The Proclaimers, if you hadn't already guessed.
("Haver" - to talk nonsense. "Yer haverin' man" )

I strongly suspect that is an very optimistic power figure for a CVH.

210 hp ?

its pretty good , not unachievable ?

100hp per litre , the comparison is pretty good - the BMEP on a CVH was very good for its day , could it be a zetec ?

looked at the pics - its not a zetec , it runs quite smooth on you tube , so no big lumpy cam .

Not impossible id imagine, but id expect to see something pretty impressive, and the engine will be on a knife edge and i suspect, not very reliable.

I make that closer to 115hp per litre which sounds pretty unlikely to me, not saying it isn't acheivable, just that for a cvh to output that much it would have to be very heavily tuned, especially given that cvh output in standard trim is nearer 115hp for 1.8 litres isn't it?

Advert seems a bit odd, selling due to health reasons but want to swap for a competition/race bike? I can't think of any illness that would stop you driving a "race" car in favour of a sport/track/off-road motorbike!

Don't know about the lap time or power boasts, but I've been puzzled for years as to what haver/havering meant.

A couple of years ago i read in Roger Mellies profanisaurus another meaning of Haver, to quote:

Havers, on the, adj. Descriptive of the way certain blokes smarm up to the opposite sex in an overly charming way, eg. kissing their hands, listening to them etc. , in the style of middle aged charmer Nigel Havers

But I'm glad you've pointed that out, I'll have something to bore people in the pub tonight

I think the quote "This is a very special car that cost just shy of 25k! to develop and build" says it all

Complete and utter Mince man.

Does he have a dyno/rolling road printout? Presumably he must as anyone who quotes bhp based on "feels like it's..." is always talking cobblers.

Depending on the rolling road he could have been told 210bhp as some of them are madly optimistic as their customers like to talk big numbers down the pub.

As for the time, was it done with a stopwatch or a proper race timing system?

note: a 1.8 cvh is tuned for economy, but the 1.6 has a far better head for power and can then be bored out to 1.9 for big numbers - if you spend some serious cash on it.

"And if I haver, whatever that means, I want to be the one that havers next to you!"

Without looking at it I'd reckon he's got a nice turbo hidden somewhere along with all those tuning bits. I had one in an Escort and the wiki article I found not long ago made sense when it said "needs servicing or you get problems"

Mine just kinda gave up on me while in the 3rd lane overtaking a wagon...

Nope, he doesn't have a turbo.

He is talking uterly sh*te.

Never seen a car in such a state. Only if it was an unfinished project.

Go on then i'll defend the bloke, a little bit anyway..

Sounds very much like the bloke selling it, isn't the bloke who compeated in it, as it's Three Sisters, and i've never heard of the other two - Pembrey? possibly?

Loton is all about grip and handling, the caterham in the first post was on 1A road tyres, slicks are a good few seconds per minute quicker - plus the leader, as it's not a road car, should be lighter.

So it could be a fair bit down on that power figure and do that sort of time - with somebody pedaling it who had a clue of course

If it's got the right diff to go with that quaife box it's got a fair collection of nice bits ( though not at that price ) - apart from the boat anchor at the front of course..
