Gearbox (or driver) problem
norfolkluego - 5/7/10 at 10:40 PM

It's a Type 9.
OK so it's not a new box and it's not difficult to get reverse when you're going for first but we have a very specific problem when sprinting it. Going flat out usually in fourth, foot hard down coming up to a chicane, break as late as possible, go for second into the chicane, nothing, won't go in. Is it because I'm not going down through the gearbox or is it a gear box problem. Only happens in those specific circumstances, never on the road.

have you got a gearbox extention thingy on it? just coz you say its not hard to get reverse when you meant 1st?

are you maybe unknowingly trying to get 2nd in what is the empty bit under reverse

be surprising if it only happened at that particular corner, but maybe just the g forces acting on your body etc, it just happens to make you push it a little bit too far over?

If you have the technology/ability to make one, a gearstick extension like mine is as precise as a stick without an extension.

See my web page for details - follow the menu for "special tools and parts" and then "Ford 5-speed gearbox extension". No dimensions there, but they're not hard to work out.

You say you have problems with the selector have you checked the little black rail clip on the selector rod ? do you have a lot of movement from side to side when say in 4 th gear ? If the answer is yes try changing the clip.
It could also be the fact your overworking the syncro on 2nd try changing down through the box its always best
I can supply a new rail clip if you need one or even take a look at your box have a look at my site firstmotion.co.uk we specialise in type 9 and mt75 reconditioned units and are able to build close ratio boxes/long 1st e.t.c as well as standard units.

Hope this helps if not give me a call the numbers on the website
