Cheap Tyre Pyrometer??

Whats the cheapest option.

£128 quid seems a lot for a multimeter and a thermocouple!

I have used an IR thermometer in the past, similar to this one from Maplins:

Maplins thermometer

I know it's not the same, but it's good enough to tell me whether the outside edges are hotter/cooler than the middle. If you get within an inch or so of the tyre surface they're pretty accurate.

I've been using a Maplins UT58 series(N79CB) from Maplins. It comes with a couple of probes.

The IR measures surface temp, which can be significantly lower than the temp just under the surface, particularly after a slow down lap.

Cheers,
Nev.

So the maplin unit comes with suitable probes?
Is there a reason demon tweeks want £60 just for the probe?

Greed, excessive profits, and there's a mug born every minute.

The maplin thermocouple is £3.59. Similar thing!!!

My Maplin meter came with a standard thermocouple, a probe thermocouple, and a set of standard test leads. Been using it for a few years now, and is as accurate for the job as needs be.

Cheers,
Nev.

Chatting to Avon they say you need to get the probe right into the tread so it needs to be pointy.
Does the maplin one do the trick, it look a bit blunt?

Think I need a probe like this

would like to find one cheaper though.
Wonder if you could make the mapline one more pointy without wrecking it?

I just sharpened the end of mine to about 90degrees angle, with a file. For £3.59 a go, I figured it was worth a try.

RS have a number of K thermocouples under £20, and as many above as well.

Cheers,
Nev.
