Quiet Fuel Pump
Hi All.
I have an SU type fuel pump mounted on the scuttle front running Dellorto 45's and it sounds like I've cut 3mm off
one of the valve stems.
It's so noisy that people ask me if I need a lift home, and every now and then I have to pull the wire off just to
check I haven't developed any real engine knocks or rattles.
pump for Del 45's
The alternatives that I know of are Facet, both the square ( SS501 / 40105 ) and the more expensive round ones.
There's also bike pumps, but I'm unsure if these can be mounted in the engine bay. They seem a cheap alternative.
Are any of the above quiet ?
Ideally, I don't want to mess with the tank or have to fit pressure regulators.
Cheers

Hi Paul,
Is the pump mounted on rubber bobbins like a 'red-top' pump?

Huco make a decent pump, not cheap though. I also wonder if the facet "posiflow" may be suitable?

No it isn't. Mounted straight onto the metal bulkhead.
That hadn't crossed my mind. For the sake of a couple of bobbins I'll try that.

The bigger facet pumps will be just as noisy. If I remember right the SU pump was often mounted in a thick rubber sleeve with a wrap around clamp like
the old ignition coil mount.

I have a facet red top and its bloody noisy. It's mounted on rubber bobbins and its as loud as a electric razor. Its really irritating. I
have a crash fuel pump cut off switch that I smack to turn the fuel pump off if I am working on the car.
Cost me a fortune and I hate the thing! Grr. You can't hear it with the V8 running though.

A lot of pumps are poor 'suckers'. Made to be fitted close to the tank and a very limited height (usually specified) above the empty fuel
level. I seem to remember 50ish years ago SU did make and specify pumps that were good suckers and could be fitted in the engine bay but most
SU's were in the boot. This was in my morris minor and had to be clouted with the wheel brace at intervals if it didn't rattle when the
ignition was first switched on. They were rubber mounted.
Rubber mount yours but it may be that mounting it closer to the tank and lower would reduce the noise.

So I'm not the only one with this problem. Just did a test with a dB meter and it was 82.
Not as bad as the wife "back seat driving", if there is such a thing in a seven, but annoying just the same.
I'll mount on a rubber and put a sock over it to start with, then perhaps contemplate more drastic action later.
Awaiting a work delivery at the moment so passing time by working on the car.

With a bobbin mount, 77.4
Bobbin and foam wrap, 75
I need to try it on the road now but it's a bit drizzly at the moment.

Have you got a fuel pressure regulator fitted? Once pressure in the pipes builds up the pump slows down and is virtually silent at idle. No doubt runs
faster as you go faster but you cannot hear it above all the other noises.

Use a Weber low pressure fuel pump. Super quite and reasonably priced.
