gear lever movement
hi all,
Driving my mk indy zx12R I sometime find a false neutral (when shifting up).
I was wondering what movement /distance is "normal" at the gear knob for shifting up-down the gearbox.
( push=down pull=up )
thanks

1st to 2nd is neutral
A false neutral is between gears higher up the box. You might have some wear in your linkage Koen and the movement in one car will be different to
another depending on your lever ratios or cable route if you have cable shift.
yours, Pete
I went into the RSPCA office the other day. It was so small you could hardly swing a cat in there.

I sometimes have this problem, you need to more forcefull with your stick to engage the cogs better.

My paddles are the same.
I get stuck in neutral between 1st and 2nd and have to roll to a slower speed then slam it into 1st or 2nd to get going again.
Seems to happen more the higher up the revs go in 1st so shifting early certainly helps.

Exactly the same Pat, although I have noticed if you don't use the clutch it seems to go in fine!!

Clutchless upshifts - easy on the track when your hammering it!
Must be a blade thing like the budgie in the cam chain when it's idling.
You 919 also?

Good excuse to leave the car in 1st when driving through town anyway

Shortie - how do the paddles compare to the lever?
Did you still hit false neutrals?

Hi Guys,
I have a Blade 919 powered Westy which had a rod based paddle shift.
I knackered second, third and fourth gears (3rd was the worst for wear) then found out that the physical travel on the paddle shift was not enough,
all three cogs lost the front edge. It all started with failed down shifts and false neutrals. I have modifed the paddle shift gimble to allow for
22mm of travel each direction. It originally had less than 15 which was not enough. I also changed to a cable push pull system which has less travel
loss.
I hope this helps My gearbox rebuild was an expensive mistake. Since the modification and box rebuild, i havent missed a single gear after two
tracks days and a sprint...

my home made paddle had about 5mm of free play then another 10mm to engage gears.
I occasionally hit neutral between 1st and 2nd and like pat says its easier to get it through neutral at lower revs, i hit the limiter a couple of
times in neutral when caning it from 1st to 2nd.
more embarressing than anyting when you belt away in 1st then the car you just left standing comes past you as your fishing about the box for 2nd lol

I used to hit the odd false neutral every now and again but fitting a cable operated paddleshift seems to have cured it.
