Hi, just got a 1.6 zetec mondeo for our project. most of these questions will have been answered, but to save time i'm gunna ask them all
here!!
Ok
1. do we use the engine management system from the mondeo.
2.Which distributor do we use, the mondeo or sierra.
3.Also the wiring loom for the engine and associated engine electrics? mondeo or sierra.
4.Which bell housing do we use, the zetec or the one from the type 9 from the sierra.
5.The hydrolic pump for the power assisted steering is attatched to the engine. What do we do with this??
6.Lastly, what do we do with the alternator.
Any other info relating to these questions would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks
Andy
I run a 2.0L zetec on motorbike carbs, I know the 1.6 zetec is slightly different but hope this helps. But like it has been said there is loads of
info on this forum a quick search should give you loads more info.
1. do we use the engine management system from the mondeo. - you can but it won't be tunable, best using a Megajolt or other aftermarket ECU
(emerald, GEMS, OMEX etc)
2.Which distributor do we use, the mondeo or sierra. - none zetec doesn't have one (ECU serves this purpose)
3.Also the wiring loom for the engine and associated engine electrics? mondeo or sierra. - you will probably have to make or buy a loom for this as
once the engine has been stripped of all the stuff you won't be using the loom becomes much simpler anyway. (my engine loom (running carbs) is
really just crank position sensor, throttle position sensor, and coil connection. My alternator and starter connections are separate to the engine
loom.
4.Which bell housing do we use, the zetec or the one from the type 9 from the sierra. - standard 2.0L sierra one is OK (well for a 1.8 / 2.0L zetec it
is).
5.The hydrolic pump for the power assisted steering is attatched to the engine. What do we do with this?? - remove it and bin it
6.Lastly, what do we do with the alternator. - make a custom bracket up and fit it where ever suits you best (mine is under the carbs on my 2.0L
zetec). You can also fit a smaller alternator to save space, I have a Daihatsu Charade 1.3 one fitted to my car.

just a thought, the sites "search" facility might help you if your actually prepared to put some work into the project doing your own research

6.Lastly, what do we do with the alternator. What the hell do you think? you attach it to the engine and drive it with a "v" belt
Now go and do some research.
Start HERE
if you wanted to save weight and gain abit of power, you could run on just the battery - would be suitable for short runs on the the track; depending on capacity of battery.
gazza285 - 2/9/06 at 09:02 PMDon't mind CaLviNx, I think he must be of short stature or something, because he has the worst case of small man syndrome I've ever seen.
gazza285 - 2/9/06 at 09:03 PMForgot about my own signature for a minute there, best add a or two.

coozer - 2/9/06 at 09:37 PMIMHO simply
1. No
2. Mondeo doesnt have a dizzy ~ use megasquirt or jolt
3. If using above, (2) make your own
4. Zetec has no bellhousing of any use. A type 9 gearbox and housing is required
5. Unbolt it & junk it.
6. Put it some where that suits. There are lots of different configurations.
There may be some other issues as I wasn't aware the Mondeo came with a 1.6 and dont know what the engine config is. Is it not a 1.6SE? If so its a different animal and disregard my above advise!!!
fuz - 2/9/06 at 10:08 PMCoozer, thanks for your advice. I'm not sure if it's an SE or not as we've just got it today. Good advice all the same, thanks.
RE: My first post. It was my intention to get constructive advice on what other people have done on their builds as there are many different ways of doing it. Thanks to those who have done that. Cheers
graememk - 2/9/06 at 10:27 PMpersonally scrap it and get a 1.8, tried and tested
Mansfield - 2/9/06 at 11:22 PMHold SHIFT and click the search thread you fancy, you wont lose your other threads that way.
fuz - 2/9/06 at 11:44 PMCheers Mansfeild... Ta
stargoaly - 2/9/06 at 11:54 PMIf I find a usefull thread I just add to my favourite places like this.
Locostbuilders - remote oil filter
Locostbuilders - photo plenum chamber
etc
etc
I find this the best way to retain access to threads that have information I might need later on
Probably telling you something obvious as you work with computers
big_wasa - 3/9/06 at 08:06 AMMy advice is not to start and spend money on the 1.6.
The Mondeo engines need the water pump changing for an escort/Orion/Fiesta as they run the opposite way. You would also want the sump from the same as the mondeo one is huge.
On a budget if you are not overwhelmed by electrics you could use the original injection system. But it’s not done a lot due to the work involved and at the end of the day you will still only have 90bhp from the 1.6.
Another budget option on the zetec is to run a single carb on a cvh manifold with an adapter plate. For ignition you can use the Dis ignition from an older ford. Very easy and only a couple of wires to use. Expect no more than 100bhp out of your 1.6.
Use the bell housing that comes with the gearbox.
Alternator. Make up some brackets to mount it under the inlet manifold.
All this assumes that it is a silver top Zetec i.e. pre 1998
Give us a shout and ill sort some pics

Project7 - 3/9/06 at 10:44 AMHey Fuz,
Im using a 1.6 zetec and theres little/no difference between installing a 1.6, 1.8 or 2.0 as apart from water pumps the engines are externally similar.
The engine will a Zetec-E, as they didnt fit the SE to mondeos.

I think you can expect more that 100bhp, trust electrical quote 140bhp just with throttle bodies - I think they might be dreaming there but 120 should be reasonable - Ill let you know how i get on at the rolling road.
