opinion on car for sale?

Hi,

Apologies if this is a faux pas on a forum such as this, but I'd be interested in opinions of a Locost car described as below for a potential race car (advertised for £3k ono).

I don't really care how it looks aesthetically at this stage, and would expect to have to do some work on it - but is there anything special I should be on the lookout for?

(I'd also be interested in getting it SVA'd for road and track day use)

"Stuart Taylor Locost built to 750 MC regulations. Safety devices cage.Last raced in 2005. Previously owned by Ged Sidnell/James Grantham(2002 Champion) and Adam Wilkinson. Black and gold livery. Recent new extinguisher.Luke 5 point harness. Yokohama A539 tyres .Recently rebuilt competitive engine with new bearings, control cam , HP/HF oil pump, external oil cooler, recored Capri radiator, 711M thick walled block. GT carb and manifold. GT gearbox( 4 speed and 3.9 diff).Recent new propshaft. Rebuilt AVO dampers all round, Escort Quick rack. Stuart Taylor side exhaust exhaust. All this car would need to race now would be the correct 750MC number plate( new reg for 07). Car would be a good basis for 750MC championship . Full instrumentation, oil pressure, water temp, shift light ,rev counter."

Many thanks

Shane

Quite a historic (in Locost Terms ) car that one as it was one of the very first Locost race cars built. To be honest it's probably quite a good buy, it was a well put together car in the first place by Adam Wilkinson and his dad and the next owners Ged Sidnell and James Grantham worked/work in some capacity for Lotus (hence the paint work) so the car was always well prepared when they had it.

£3K - you couldn't build one for anything like that price so it has to be a bit of a bargain.

I will just point out in case someone tries to pull a fast one (unlikely at that price tho ) that that isn't the car that James Grantham drove the year he won the championship - the year before he shared that car with Ged, he built another one for the year he won.

It has just been pointed out to me that my assessment of the car might be slightly incorrect and that in fact it might well be James Granthams car - but you may have to do a bit of work to get it to comply with the 750MC Locost regs........ it's agreed though that it's still a bit of a bargain

Arron Bailey's car is a little more but proven to run at the front with today's regs.

It will cost at least 2k to get an unproven car to the front unless you are a Senna.

Thanks all - thats really helpful!

The more I read about all this the more I want to get stuck in; it just seems the perfect combination of driving pleasure, tinkering, and a cost-effective race+track+weekend road car* combination!

hehe there's no way I'm a Senna, but happy to spend a little after purchase to get the car up to speed

Just need to convince my other half now...

cheers

Well seeing as the car car is mine I thought it was worth commenting on the thread - I know Richard Pearsons car in that I sold him the chassis - having first bought it off Mr Baverstock as a spare. As far as whether my car is James Granthams or Ged's ? Who knows - I have spoken to James at length about it and he is adamant that it is not his championship winning car. Also Adam Wilkinson was at Snett in 05 and came up to me and said "I built that car!". That would seem to suggest that it is Ged's car not James. I measured the front suspension pick up points and they are all within the chapionships allowable dimensions.

Regarding whether it is good value - again pays your money takes your choice. Whilst it is true to say that this car hasn't run at the front like Aarons this year, I would humbly suggest that this is mainly due to the driver ability. There is little point in a novice buying a front running car for top dollar - you pay a premium for provenance - as you won't be able to utilise the few % extra performance that the car would have. In my opinion you are better off being a safe, reliable possibly a little slower car (and cheaper) - then use the money you have saved to do lots of testing. But it's your money!
