Do race suits need to be fire proof?

It depends what you intend to do with it.
If just for track days then no, or even club motorsport events like night rallies, autotests etc, no.
If however you're going to do a race, or a hillclimb for instance then yes, it would need to be.

Have you got yourself a copy of the MSA Blue Book?
That will give you a list of the acceptable standards for overalls, helmet etc . . .

Depending on where you do your race license test they might include a copy of the above pack in their cost.
