time/resource costs in racing?

Hi,

I'm looking to start racing next year and so far Locost seems to be a great series to run,

I have a couple of questions though - if I've missed the answers in previous posts then apologies

I'm happy with the costs so far as I can see in getting* a car and racing for the year, but what sort of time/equipment is needed to run one for a year? I'm halfway mechanically minded, but I don't have my own garage and am aware the regs prohibit professional help

*sorry, buying a 2nd hand car, definitely not capable of scratch-building my own yet

Also, I'd be looking to use it as a combined race + track day + weekend fun car (i.e. road legal). Beyond the obvious (SVA, legals, MOT, maintenance, tyres, etc), are there any issues or anything I should be aware of here?

Any help appreciated - kinda new to all this so hope the above makes sense!

thanks

S

Hi Well locost racing is as youve probbably found out already if youve done some research one of the championships where the cars are quite easy to work on and prep easily your self with a bit of knowledge and your average diy car tools.

You are also lucky that there are a few of the cars currently for sale ranging from £3500 for a car on its own with a few spares up to £6500 for a complete outfit inc tow van and trailer. So theres a good few cars to choose from.

The formula has a lot of people with in it who are always willing and ready to help with just about anything you will need or need to know. So there no reason to think you will be left wondering how to do anything or where to get things from ect.

Have you been to any races this year or do you have any expirience of the cars. If it's of any help we are having a trackday at snetterton on sun 11th where you would be more than welcome to come along and get in the passenger seat as there will be a few people there who are already serious about getting out for next year. I think there will be two or three locost race cars there.

Time you will have to spend working on the car will depend on how relaible the car is but it shouldent really take up more than say a days work inbetween each race to get preped for the next race.

Any questions you may have will get answered on here ( but you have to remember that not all people answering your question have the full knowlege of the regs ect )or there is also two other sites where most of the drivers ( who will have more in depth knowlege of the regs ) are ussually found. Although there are ussually 4-5 drivers found loitering on here aswell. Rob palin-simes43-stevetzoid-andrews_45-GazzaP-pointy-pumpers. And i am bound to have missed a few outaswell. links to the other sites are.

YAHOO GROUP Although you will need to register wich may take a day but mention you are wanting to race and it will get trough a bit quicker i think.

Shivars,

I shall be at snetterton on sunday with my locost and my wife will be driving during the day, so stick yer hat coat and gloves on, tell the wife its a fun day out and come over for a chat and a cuppa.
This year was my first year racing and I only started mid-season with locost after starting in Bumper cars..sorry I mean stock hatch!!
My 2 children came to all the meets and I can honestly say you will receive nothing but help from all around.
Matt is a great source of help..

Thanks!

Hi all,

Just wanted to say thanks all for your welcome and help on Sunday - had a great day, and feel properly inspired to get racing!

Many thanks again, and (barring the odd random question), hopefully will be lining up next to y'all in the Spring (well, maybe behind somewhere at the back of the grid...)

cheers

Shane
