Anyone fancy a road trip next year?
flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 12:45 PM

I am planning 2 road trips next year.

One at the end of July around the scottish highlands, and another currently at an undecided time through spain and france.

Basically the scottish one is as planned for this year (theres an old thread on here somewhere).

The european one is as follows:

Get the car ferry from Portsmouth to either Santander or Bilbao on the northern spanish coast. Then drive back up north around the coast, through france, picking up the ferry/tunnel at either Calais or carrying on through to Den Haag (The Hague) if time permits.

This would be a week long trip. It would be good to have a couple of other cars on board and should be a good laugh.

If you are interested let me know, and I can try to arrange it between dates where others would be available.

Overall length of the trip would be about 1500 miles including the driving in this country. Ferry to spain for a car and 2 passengers is about £250.

Cheers,
David

Is it sevens only or are tintops allowed?

arghgh i'm neaerly booked up and busy for most of next year already.

will there be a later one and when ?

flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 01:07 PM

Any car you like, would be more fun in seven, but up to you.

The other thread with the scottish details are here: (obviously that was for this year, next years would be around the same time though)

Just trying to get an idea, then if people are seriously interested I will take the planning another stage.

speedyxjs - 27/11/08 at 01:16 PM

Im interested. Will be on holiday from college at the time of the scottish one so would just need to arrange time off work.

mcerd1 - 27/11/08 at 01:25 PM

I should be able to meet up with you at some point on a scottish trip (at least for part of the route)

you never know - I might even have a seven by then

give me a shout if you want some info on anything up that way, chances are I'll be up that way a few times between now and next summer

On the France bit, can you go up via the Millau Bridge?
See a bit of great British architecture!

The Milau bridge is the one that the Top Gear boys went to in the Ford GT, Ferrari and Zonda.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Millau_viaduct

I lived in the Hague for 18mths and it's a great place, so highly recommended you carry on all the way up there. Although it's a mighty long drive through Belgium and the Southern half of the Netherlands

Might tempted myself I have to admit!

cheers,
James

^^^ That looks pretty good

flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 02:31 PM

Certainly could, its a big detour, but well worth it I should think!

The route could always take the central route across france instead of the coast, taking the country routes all the way.

Ie go straight across to Montpellier and then up the A75 over the Millau viaduct up to Troyes, then either to Calais, or to The Hague cross country.

Either route to Calais or The Hague is 1200 miles from Santander.

speedyxjs - 27/11/08 at 02:39 PM

Any idea when the french one would be david?

flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 02:58 PM

I'm easy as I havent booked any holiday off work next year yet.

It would be nice to make it a 2 week trip, this is a possibility as I could swap them around. Do the scottish one earlier next year (over easter most likely) which gives us longer on the French one!

tegwin - 27/11/08 at 03:03 PM

Sounds awsome..

But why would you want to drive on the flatish ocean road...

I could, and have, spent a week thrashing around the Alps...(all of them)... Hour upon hour of twisting alpine road, tunnels..hairpins.... YES PLEASE!

maartenromijn - 27/11/08 at 03:06 PM

LIke above, When you are in France, you just have to do the mediterrenean coast, and then go up through the alps. I know because I have been there many times on my Fireblade!

maartenromijn - 27/11/08 at 03:08 PM

Oh, I'm affraid my se7en will not be ready in summer 2009...

flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 03:11 PM

At the moment nothing is really planned, so the route is up for discussion. If I can get some people definately interested then we can discuss routes. To make a 2 week trip the dates would be 25th July to 9th August.

Benzine - 27/11/08 at 04:21 PM

I'd be interested in both Would be cool if the route went by Ypres, amazing town square there, usually loads of nice cars/bikes, lots of nice restaurants/beer & WW1 history

Just imagine it a fleet of 7s three abreast and hopefully at least 5 deep unfortunately I dont think the wife will agrred to that as the main summer hols but it would be awesome.

DIY Si - 27/11/08 at 05:11 PM

So would the Scottish trip be around easter of more early summer? If I still have the 7, I'll be well up for a road trip round the race track of Scotland.

Likely easter

speedyxjs - 27/11/08 at 05:24 PM

Just to be a paid, i dont suppose you know which week in easter? I only ask as i would definately come to that one if its not the same week as one of our drivers has booked.

flak monkey - 27/11/08 at 05:31 PM

For the European one there's also the chance, seeing as it would be a fortnight, to take in the Col De Turini (Top Gears best Driving Road)! (Detour, but worth it)

Not sure which easter week. Will let you know.

David

bbwales - 27/11/08 at 05:39 PM

I was looking at driving down to Madrid and across to Valencia, then north up around the med and onto Rome. But yours looks a great route and would willingly join you.

I am also looking at a weekend drive around North Wales in May.

Regards

Bob

mediabloke - 27/11/08 at 05:44 PM

Good Timing!!! I've been trying to plan a highland trip of my own, and easter seemed about the best time to do it. Will check the diary, but I'd be up for it.

I'd be interested in covering it as an LCB event too, if anyone would be interested in the results - stills or video.

Several birds with 1 large stone...?

For France (alps) you could contact one or more of the French members! IIRC Mike Capon is somewhere near the Alps.

Edit to say: I think there are some Italian members as well!

DIY Si - 27/11/08 at 06:56 PM

Either Easter week would be ok with me. If I'm really lucky I can leave the wife at home too! Although, it is a bloody long way up the motorway at 7,000 rpm. Oh well, best invest in some ear plugs!

Hammerhead - 27/11/08 at 06:57 PM

Hi David,

Might be up for the euro one. Depends on route but it might be sensible, if you go for 2 weeks, to offer a rondevous for people who might wish to join you for 1 week.

I was thinking of going to the Nurburgring or the Le Mans classic, but went to nurb this year so might be up for a change.

Maybe in the Indy if it gets done, if not the elise.

I went to monpelier area also this year and is about 12 hours driving from here.

keep us informed.

Steve.

dave1888 - 27/11/08 at 09:25 PM

On the Scottish trip chances are the the guys from jock7s, SKCC and the lotus guys will be going upto Bigsand again next year at the begining of August. This year was fantastic. Can keep all posted when something is organised.

Danozeman - 27/11/08 at 09:33 PM

Id deffo be up for the scotland one. will it be a week or weekend or what?

Maybe the france one if i can pursuade wife as daughter will have to live with parents for the time away.

jambo - 27/11/08 at 10:07 PM

i would be interested if the scottish one comes off.

flak monkey - 28/11/08 at 09:21 AM

The ferry for Plymouth to Santander for leaving on Sunday 26th July 2009 is £349 for 2 people and a car. A bit more expensive due to being a peak holiday time.

European trip would catch the ferry above, and would return via the tunnel on saturday 8th August.

If people wanted to join for 1 week then I would suggest the first week would be the best as this would be the week which would cover the Alps and Col De Torino.

Scottish trip would be the first week of easter meeting in the lake district on Saturday 4th April and returning on Easter Monday (13th April)

Open to all, cars (kit or tin top), bikes, whatever. I may also invite others from Mini2. If we can get enough people up for it it should be a good trip.

If you are seriously interested then let me know. I will probably start 2 threads on here, one for each trip at a later date.

Cheers,
David

Woohoo!!
That'll give me a whole 9 days away from The Boss, enjoying my toy car all to myself. Excellent news!
