FDMC Autosolo - this Sunday

FDMC are holding their season opener at Montgomery Lines off Alison Road, Aldershot this coming Sunday.
Follow the FDMC orange Castrol arrows off A325 Farnborough Road to the venue.
Action kicks off at around 0930hrs until approx.1600hrs.
Spectators are welcome.
Entry includes Se7ens, MX5's etc. etc..

We'll be in the Formula27 unless we've drowned on the way there!

Wont be at the above event, but I will be at my first national autosolo event at Bolton having entered the BTRDA autosolo newcomers championship. Got the car running after winter at 11 last night, so hoping that wont throw a spanner in the works of what will proberbly be an eventful enought day already! Looking forward to it.

So we set off at crack of sparrows.
Reached Fleet and turned into a mates road with the idea of doing a drive-by just to wake him up.
Reaching for second the clutch pedal hit the floor!
Turns out the clutch cable has snapped!!!!!
Odds on finding a Fiat131 cable on a Sunday = NIL.
Think I'll go back to bed.
Trust you enjoyed it if you went, looks like a nice day out there.

I went down there this morning to take a look at how things work - was surprised not to see you there, kinda guessed you'd probably had some sort of problem.

Looked like a fun sort of motor sport, not too competitive or expensive and a good chance of going home with everything intact. I reckon remembering the way round might be my hardest challenge......

Unfortunately running 888's is a no-no so I'd have to invest in another set of wheels and tyres if I wanted to have a go, I'm now regretting selling the spare set a while back....

I know a couple who have been frustrated by this if they already have them as there normal tyre, but you have to do something to it fair and given the price of a set of part worns in cheaper rubber it proberbly works out cheaper in the long run if you have the capacity to store them.

I had a great day at Bolton le moors, as my first round of my first BTRDA Newcomers Autosolo, mustnt have got the sump gasket in quite right as it started passing oil from the rear for the last few runs, but otherwise a cracking day in the sun, nice people, finished 8th out of 18 in our event. (There where running a Clubmans Autosolo, Autotest, and National B autosolo concurently).

£35 entry fee
£11 for a 1litre of oil from the servicestation
Limited tyre/car wear, and then just fuel to get there
Cheap motoring.

Thanks for the suggestions but I took the view it wasn't meant to be.
However I "needed" to pop back to the mates with the keys for the F27 as it's likely to be on his drive untill the new cable arrives courtesy of fleabay.
Just so happened that being a nice day I took the Lav out for a leg stretch.
Popped in at the Autosolo but wished I hadn't as it looked a cracking course.
Interestingly there were 5 drop-outs before the event due to mechanical failure - three clutch related!
Next time....

On the subject of wheels and tyres it really is worthwhile investing in an Autosolo set. They don't have to be anything fancy. Looking at most of the quick Se7en type cars they run no wider than 195's. In fact the F27 turned in a lot better at the end of last season using the 185's which came with the car on the front.

Yeah, im currently on a set of RE720's which I picked up partworn for £10 a corner when the A038's, on another set of wheels, stopped being road legal.

These are now in themselves becoming dubious for road legalilty, so there is a bit of a dylema as three sets is proberbly a tiny bit gready, if only from the point of view of filling the garden up!

Road, low wear, fairly grippy, but needs to be road legal.
Track, med-high wear, fairly grippy, doesnt need to be legal (cast offs over the above?)
Autotest, med-high wear, doesnt need to be super grippy or road legal, but can be list A1...

I think proberbly i'll keep the ageing A038's slightly longer and get another few trackdays out of them, if i even have time/money this year with everything else. And get a set of auto-solo suitable road tyres. Which also will allow me to drive to tests on them.

Tintop needs a new pair of rears too! It all keeps coming...

The 1B tyre dilema was discussed quite vigerously when the MSA introduced their desire to stop using 1Bs for Autosolos, FDMC did a crossover year where by those with 1bs could use them but would be classifed in kitcar class no mater what car they were in. The point that where 1B's are 'standard fitment' should be allowed (ie caterhams/elise/exige etc) was argued, but sadly a blanket 'no 1Bs' was still intruduced. HOWEVER there is a slight grey area as there are (used to be?) some road legal track orientated tyres that ARENT on the 1B list, there for as long as they arent marked 'for competion use only' and do have legal tread then you can technically use them.

Its still slightly unclear, atleast in the BTRDA Regs (below) as the only referance to 1B tyres is lumped in with the requirments of the production cars, ie, suggesting it does not apply to a Class E car.

Where as in others, such as the Bolton le Moors regs for sunday, its not, suggesting it applies to all cars.

I assume it a minor oversight on the layout of BDRTA regs. Certianly im not about to buy a set of 1B tyres and try and use them!

A small debate was had this sunday about wheel mount steering balls, which I use one off, but apprently although it transpired it was fine by bolton (and, as far as i can tell, everyone else) accrington have a bit of a thing about them, and infact as its going to be my next event, have it in there regs that they are not allowed.

Only a minor annoyance to me, having to unbolt it to have to not use it, and i have it removable for road work, but if you had a wheel with one permantly attached it would be far more of annoyance. I dont know what the rules are regarding there use on the road.
