R1 oil pressure 3psi
Major Stare - 11/6/10 at 02:16 PM

Since fitting the R1 5PW with a baffle plate, on tick over when warm the DigiDash reads 3psi.

When running, the pressure rises to a "normal" reading.

Is this reading low because of the baffle plate? ? ? ?

Oil level when cold is at top of oil sight.

My oil pressure light has always flickered at tickover when hot. Shouldnt be anything to do with fitting the baffle plate though. Must be coincidence

You say after fitting the baffle plate was it higher before?

Sounds about right though mines always been very low at idle, with the pressure lost through the turbo sometimes lower than 3psi.
Whats you idle speed i tend to set mine over 1000rpm that helps.

I posted loads abit lower PSI when I had a BEC GSXR. It had a baffle sump.

Some said it was a dying engine becasue the crank shims would not float on 3PSI of oil.

Others said that its ok because its low revs and the oil pressure picks up as soon as you revved it.

I changed the oil and found no metalic bits showing excess wear. My conclusion was that its ok.

I crashed the car a week later so never found out!!!

HTH

My resources were: AB Performance say it will go bang 3PSI is too low.

Previous owner, local good bike shop and Cresent Suzuki all said it will be fine.

Oh by the way this is not a dig at AB one little bit. Andy may of been correct but my driving skills never let me find out!!

There is a huge rev range on bike engines, probally the low pressure is because at high rpm the pump will flow too much oil, or could the relief valve be sticking?

Mines been like that for the best part of 5 years so i wouldnt worry about it!

Having just said that , dont blame me if it goes bang

jimgiblett - 11/6/10 at 03:25 PM

How accurate do you think the sender is.

Probably +/- 5psi

I have had 2 cars with 5PWs and they both triggered the low oil pressure warning light ticking over when hot.

3psi does sound low.

My R1 5PW shows between 8 and 10psi at a hot idle.

As said if you set the idle a fraction higher then the pressure seen will also be higher.

adithorp - 11/6/10 at 05:40 PM

My 5VY is about 5psi at hot idle. About 40psi cold.

Allowing for guage variation it could be OK/normal.

Out of curiosity where is the gauge plugged in and do you run the oil relief thing(technical i know) as i remember removing it as i was told it wasnt needed and could cause problems coming free.

Mines plumbed into the plug on the end of the oil gallery (where Yamaha read the presure).

The sender is tapped into the oil/water cooler unit.

I'll check my tick-over tomorrow and see if that helps. 3psi does concern me

From the same position(cooler) with a baffle in but without the relief tulip mine runs at between 0.5 bar and 4 bar so 7psi - 60psi.
Just to add my guage shows 0-10 bar so its hard to say exactly what its showing so may be marginally lower that ive mentioned above.
