cost to make 2 adaptors
jabbahutt - 25/1/12 at 11:52 AM

Morning all

I know a lot of you on here are very skilled with lathes etc and ocasionally produced parts for other builders. I'm firstly after a rough idea of cost to make 2 adpators out of steel/aluminium(which ever is best suited to the task, I don't know)

Each adaptor will essentially be a lathed piece of material 40mm in approx length with a hole through the centre to fit some wires. On one end the hole will have an internal thread to suit attaching to the bottom of a headlight mounting and the other an external thread the same as a shower hose.

edit to add will require 2 flats on external in centre to allow use of spanner to tighten/prevent turning

Apologies for the rubbish description and lack of thread knowledge etc (complete idiot) but if anyone could give me a rough idea of cost to make two and secondly if anyone is interested in making two could you please let me know what information you'd require( I can provide pdf drawings with sizes etc it's just the thread info I'm unsure of)

Thanks for you continued patience of my complete lack of engineering in general
Nigel

This maybe cheaper to achieve by welding an M10 or M12 nut over a 1/2" BSP hexagon nipple that had 1 threaded end removed. Turned adaptors will look nicer but would be a good bit more expensive to produce. Let me know the exact threads and it should be easier to ascertain the best method to achieve it.

Just for your info a shower hose is 1/2" BSP.
No idea what a headlight is, other than it's usually a fine thread.

p.s.
A half BSP nipple TIG'ed to a nut?

Must type faster.

normally double the material price +10% but i dont have time to make anything for people at the moment as i am busy until April

flac may be able to do it for you.

thanks for the info. At least I now know one of the thread sizes.

I believe that the headlight mounting thread is 5/8" BSB 26TPI. I've seen 1/2 BSP nipples on a chandlers website. Would it be possible to either cut the BSB thread on the inside or sleeve it somehow with that thread.

That would then give me exactly what I'm after.

The thread on my headlamps is 1/2" UNC.

that's got me doubting then. looks like the first thing I need to do is confirm without any doubt what thread is on a Lucas 5 3/4 headlight for mounting it to the car.

Then get two nuts for the headlight and two 1/2 bsp nipples and join them together

Thanks for all the advice and help, much appreciated as always.

Or get a 1/2" bsp plug and drill and tap it to suit your headlight.

cracking idea, would small local engineering firms have taps for things like 5/8" 26TPI threads?
