engine stand dilemma

hi everybody i have a dilemma, i recently bought an engine stand made by draper.


i managed to get my pinto engine out of the boot on my own today,( that was the hard part), but know im faced with the silliest of problems.


i cant get the engine on to the stand, i dont know where to put the support arms(and they look a bit small to)


can any one help me on the orientation of the engine and stand?
i was thinking that i might need extension poles or something similar

and just for you destruction freeks here is the current state of my donar

You should be able to bolt through to the bell housing mounting points, you may find it useful to take the flywheel off before doing this.

I use some cut lengths of 10mm threaded bar about 120mm long to go throught the four outermost bellhousing mounting points. If you can, remove the complete rotating piece from the stand, slacken the support arms so that they can move freely, then bolt these to the bellhousing mounting points. Tighten everything back up then fit the stand frame onto the mounting plate tube and relax.

where did you get " 100mm " threaded
bar from i wouldnt like to hold the spanner to tight the nut on that bugger

maybe a "typo" and you ment 10mm

Bell housing back plate will give you at least 6 places that are all on the same vertical plane. use long high tensile bolts to secure. HTH

Its a zetec block but the spacings more or less the same. You will need to take the flywheel of first.

How much was that stand? Been considering getting one for a while. Can they take teh weight of the full engine ie with all ancillaries?

ive taken the flywheel and clutch off now, but i will have to go up b&q tomorrow to get some bolts, thanks for all the advice guys big help

Non of the purchased engine stands seem to fit properly. You have to either turn up your own extensions to fit or remove the flywheel - not an ideal scenario. I've seen lots of people attach their stand to the bolt holes for the engine mounts on the side of the block - Not sure I'd do it but does seem perfectly strong and reliable.....Otherwise just make your own - we used to have to do that with tractor engines - it's actually alot easier than it looks although obviously you lose some useability eg rotating. That is a very nice looking stand though! How much was it if you don't mind me asking....Oli.

Oli and i had some fun sticking my Pinto on the cheapest of the machine mart stands, it involved lengths of 10mm stud and cut lengths of conduit! I also had to drill two of the arms on the stand to get onto 4 points. I can only presume there is something atypical about the pinto block that makes it difficult!

I've got the cheapest Machine Mart one too, I used the above mentioned 10mm (not 100mm) threaded bar to fix my Crossflow minus flywheel to it with no problems. As the Pinto has the same bellhousing pattern I can't see how you had a problem.

my one above holds 450kg and was £40, how much do the ones at machine mart hold for £40

The only engines I've worked on (not a lot!) had a rear engine plate. So the flywheel and plate had to be remove before putting the thing on the stand if I wanted to remove the crank.

450kg is a hell of a heavy engine....you could mount a whole BEC to that....(ignoring moments of force)....225kg is also quite considerable....so unless you're rebuilding heavy v8s, is it an issue?

Biggest problem I found with one of these Machine Mart stands is rotating the engine. You pull the pin, start to tilt - and all of a sudden you've got the full weight of the engine on a short lever! Even a bare x-flow block can get a bit 'interesting', and it's even more of a challenge when everything is attached.

It's OK when you're expecting it... you sort-of 'brace yourself' and ease it over...

Try getting any engine onto any stand with the flywheel in place! (without ummm modification shall we say) I have yet to see anybody manage.....If you have pictures pls and who'd you buy the stand off as I'll have one! Oli.
