MX5 sump clearance - any issues?
cjwood23 - 18/11/11 at 04:38 PM

Guys,
Still looking at the MX5 option for the Vortx.
Having looked at a couple of Westfield MX5's there seemed to be a clearance issue with the sump being quite low.
Is this just a westy issue or will I need to think about getting a modded sump?

Cheers

It defo needs chopped. I made the mistake of fitting the engine then realising it needed chopped. Dont make the mistake i made either you cant remove the sump while the engine is attached to the gearbox

I am building a MNR Vortx MX5 and this is the first i have heard of this issue. The one on the MNR demo car was not chopped when i looked at it either. A couple of guys on here have built them and now on the road so maybe they can enlighten us.

Coming from someone who has built, IVA'd, and driven a Vortx Mazda, I can confirm there is no issue what so ever. I've just taken a photo but can't upload fom my iPad, so will fire up the laptop later and post a pick for all to see.

No issues with the sump on mine ('99 miata 1.8L)…it's flush with the chassis and I didn't have to raise the engine; there's very tight clearances from the top of the engine to the bonnet, but that seems on par for all of the lotus 7 replicas.

Hi,
I built the first MNR MX5 1.8 and have had no issues in 2000 miles, The engine in mine is not too close to the bonnet and the sump is barely visible below the chassis. In fact its the chassis crossmember under the gearbox thats the lowest point and I have only grounded that going over the curb onto my drive to fast.

So I can promise you that its not an issue.

Hope this helps

Dave

Hope this helps. The torch does highlight the sump, but it is flush with chassis.

How far below the chassis rails does the sump hang? it looks like about 20mm or so which I would think would be ok

It's about 8mm at most. If you do manage to hit that on something, then I'd lift your arse out of the seat cos its gonna hurt!
