Locost switch
PSpirine - 31/5/11 at 06:09 PM

I'm converting my oil burning Rover to twin-tanks for veg oil and I've got a valve to switch the tanks over.

Now to operate, this valve has two wires. To operate from tank A, wire 1 must have +12v, and wire 2 must be earthed. To switch over to tank B, wire 1 must be earthed and wire 2 must have +12v - i.e. switch polarity.

Is there any way I can achieve this with a simple switch like this one without resorting to the use of two relays? I'm trying to keep it simple and CHEAP.

Or alternatively can anybody point me to a similarly inconspicuous switch with a green LED that is ON-ON or whatever the required configuration is called?

Thanks,
Pavel

Could you use a double pole, double throw switch? It would work like an electric window switch..

Just an idea

Easy done, many ways - if you want the locost approach ill send you some old relays!

Have a look at landrovers lightweight twin tank set up ,the tap in the cab changed tank feeds and also fuel guage sender feeds, this might suit your needs,

as said a DPDT (double pole double throw) swicth will do it easily

something like this

Looks OK to me, but you will need to cut a square hole to put it in, whereas the standard togle type only needs a 12 or 13mm hole. Cheers Ray

what happens if its moved to the middle position though?

surely what you really need is a douple pole double throw on-on switch?

Yes, I don't want a centre-off!

I'm struggling to find a black rocker switch with a LED that's DPDT - I want one of these as it looks far more OEM than a silver toggle switch.

I may end up using a relay setup as that way I can just use one of the existing OEM buttons and make it completely invisible. But I don't want to deal with relays to be honest, even though I know how to wire up the circuit with a couple of them.

Thanks for confirming I need a DPDT - I'll look out for an appropriate one!

Mechanical tap ala land rovers won't work, as I'll need two of them and not keen on having agricultural valves in my leather interior lol

Cheers all
